Most of the books in our school library were written before the invention of the Internet. There is a definite danger in only teaching texts that predate my students, especially for kids who do not consider themselves readers; the texts don't represent the diversity of identity in my classroom, nor are they particularly accessible or relatable for students who are living through a paradigmatic shift in conventions surrounding language, relationships, and social conversations. These books will allow my students to develop empathy and an understanding of social and historical context through discussions and activities that explore the intersection of race, gender, and class, while still challenging them with beautiful and complex language. My goal is to eventually have class sets of all of these highly recommended books. It may take me a few projects to get there, but it is incredibly urgent for us to get these books into students' hands. I hope you'll help me bring the voices of these phenomenal writers into my (virtual) classroom!
