These materials will make a tremendous difference in the lives of my students. In my class, they will be encouraged to read constantly because readers are leaders. They will have copious amounts of independent reading time and it is essential that my students are given stories that open their eyes and their minds to the world around them. Students must have access to literature that reflects them, but it is also necessary for my students to have access to the stories that are beyond their own personal understanding. As a first-year teacher, I am building my classroom library from the ground up. My goal is for these resources to plant seeds of empathy within my students; diverse readers become knowledgeable members of society who have grown to care for and understand the global community, regardless of differences.
