  • Books and Snacks: A Perfect Combo

    Funded Jan 1, 2025

What a great New Years surprise!

Can’t wait to tell my students when we return to school that our Reading Decathlon snacks will be arriving shortly as well as some new books that were requested! I’ve had some ask already if I ever ordered some of these and I’m happy I’ll be able to report they’re coming soon!”

  • Reading Decathlon Books!

    Funded Sep 7, 2023

Thank you so much for your contribution to our reading decathlon! This is the first year we're doing RD at my school and the kids and I are so excited to participate this year. I already have students telling me they're going to tell their younger siblings to join once they're in middle school.

The books came sooo quickly and we were able to get started right away. Some students have finished 2-3 books and have enjoyed all they've read. "Hey Kiddo" is a bit more mature, and will be an optional part of our competition, but it's become a favorite with those participating.

Thank you again, and happy reading!”

  • Favorite Books of 2022

    Funded Jan 10, 2023

I couldn't say at the time, but some of these books are nominees for the California Young Readers Medal (CYRM). I've made a great display on my desk that features these books. CYRM has kids read and vote on their favorite book in several categories. With your generosity, I was able to get the nominated books. I love this award because students are given the chance to vote on what book THEY liked best; it's not adults telling them what books are 'good' and 'award-winners.'

I have students asking me when they'll find out the winners (May 1) and can't believe they have to wait so long. Students are also sharing the information with friends and encouraging each other to read the books and vote. It's amusing when a group of friends disagrees on which book should win, and I enjoy listening to their reasons and trying to convince one another.”

  • More Books, More Fun!

    Funded Mar 30, 2023

Wow! Thank you all for your generosity! I was able to get most of the books processed and out on the shelves the last few weeks of school. Some of these books are already making the most popular list for checkouts.

We've been in school for just a week, and I've had over 200 books circulate. That is amazing, especially since 6th graders and new students might not even know where the library is. I'm so happy to be able to give students books THEY want to read.

When the kids ask me for a book and I'm able to say I have it, or can put it on hold, it's such an amazing feeling. Just a few years ago, students would ask me for popular books and I'd have to tell them that "sorry, I don't have that one." It's so different now with all the support I've received.”

  • New Library, New Books!

    Funded Mar 30, 2023

We've started the year off strong with so many students coming to the library to check out books! It really makes my teacher and librarian heart happy! In just a week I've had over 200 books circulated. This is really incredible for a school library that was closed most of last year.

It's so amazing to have a FULL new book bookcase. That's right, an entire bookcase is filled with new books from this and other DonorsChoose campaigns. It's exciting to tell students that people from all over the country are supporting their ability to read and willing to purchase books that are fun and interesting.”

  • All Sorts of Books

    Funded May 10, 2023

    Woohoo!

This was a great Teacher Appreciation and Birthday week! Thank you so much for all your donations. I've had some kids ask me for One Piece and Naruto in particular. Hopefully I'll be able to get them quickly and process before school ends. It'll make for a great last read before summer. :)”

  • Jerry Craft Visits Middle School

    Funded Nov 30, 2022

This event was so great, and it was thanks to YOU! With 12/15 English teachers reading "New Kid" with their students, nearly 80% of Revere kids read the graphic novel before Mr. Craft visited Revere virtually. The students were treated to a presentation by Jerry Craft and then given the opportunity for a Q&A. Kids were tickled when their class questions were asked aloud.

This 'one book, one school' was a great success, made possible by your generous donation! We could not have had Jerry Craft's visit without your help.

Teachers have already told me they're planning on reading "New Kid" with their 6th grade students next year! One 6th grade teacher is also reading the sequel with her students because they liked the first one so much. As a librarian, this makes me so incredibly happy.”

  • Manga, Own Voices and More

    Funded Jan 29, 2022

My students have LOVED the books I was able to purchase. The graphic novels are FLYING off the shelves and most have holds on them. I already have students asking me when I'll be able to purchase more.

Part of what I love about being a librarian is being able to give students books they WANT to read, not books they are assigned.

When I'm able to tell the kids I have graphic novels like Demon Slayer and JoJo, their eyes light up and look so surprised. (It's fun being the cool librarian).

The library recently underwent a renovation and I'm so excited to finish setting up the graphic novel section. I'm moving them to a separate section that will make it easier for students to browse and have flexible seating nearby. I can't wait to see the chairs filled with middle schoolers reading. :)”

  • All Manga All the Time

    Funded May 5, 2022

I apologize for the delay! The library was painted during the summer and they found asbestos, so it's been an interesting start to the school year. When the books were received back in May I was able to start processing right away. The

One aspect I love about librarianship is recommending books to students. I don't have to think about whether or not they're reading their Lexile, or what standards I'm hitting. Rather, I can provide books to children they're going to enjoy. Graphic novels are a prime example of providing books to students I know they'll love.

I can't wait to return to the library and have the students reading throughout the day. I get asked several times a day, by students and teachers alike, when the library will reopen. The graphic novels will be among the first books I unpack!”

Children want to see themselves in the books they read. Yet, too often, the books they're told to read are outdated and have characters they can't relate to. By working with English teachers and our diversity clubs, I have complied a list of high quality books that feature diverse characters and are relevant to students today! With these new books, my students and I are so excited to work with teachers to create book clubs in their classes. Students will be able to choose which book they want to read and will be leaders in discussions. Choice in reading is one of the best ways to interest and engage students to read more! While reading, children will increase their literacy skills and also learn about the experiences of diverse individuals. We will also have the opportunity to share with other class about our reading experiences and create dialogue in our school community.
