  • Farm to Value-Added

    Funded Nov 13, 2024

Mahalo for believing in our students and our project. Your generous contribution allows us to transform our farm produce into value-added products like essential oils, natural soaps, lotions, and more. Your support empowers our students to become creative thinkers and self-reliant individuals, who can turn farm-to-market ideas into reality. Together, we are growing more than just plants—we are cultivating knowledge, sustainability, and a brighter future for our students and community. Mahalo once again for your kindness and support. Mahalo, Kumu G "”

  • Connect to ʻAina

    Funded Oct 25, 2024

Thank you so much for supporting our "Connecting to ʻĀina project!" Your contributions have made an incredible impact in our classroom.

With your support, we were able to expand and repair our irrigation system in our school garden, plant a variety of vegetable seeds, and hope to use the new oven to prepare for our upcoming Thanksgiving celebration. The students are currently working on a farm-to-table project where they are cultivating crops such as kalo (taro), ʻuala (sweet potato), squash, and herbs. Once harvested, they will prepare meals using these crops, learning about nutrition and the value of traditional Hawaiian foods.

When the students first saw the new materials—particularly the oven and irrigation system—their faces lit up with enthusiasm.. It made them feel empowered and inspired to take on the responsibility of cultivating their own food.

Currently, our students are learning to apply traditional Hawaiian agricultural methods alongside modern sustainable practices. The next step is to design individual recipes for a "community feast" that we plan to hold at the end of the semester/school year. Each student will contribute a dish made from the garden, and we will invite families and community members to share in their learning. This is our way of celebrating their hard work and the connections they are building with each other and with the ʻāina.

We are so grateful for your support. You are not just providing tools—you are allowing my students to reconnect with nature, build life skills, and develop a sense of pride in their accomplishments.

    Mahalo nui loa!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. G.

  • Makaʻala: Addressing Food Insecurity through a Microscopic Lens

    Funded Oct 22, 2024

I can't thank you enough for your generous support of our "Makaʻala" project. Because of you, we now have handheld microscopes that have completely changed how my students interact with the world around them.

When we first unpacked the microscopes, we took them to our school garden, where the students immediately began investigating soil samples, leaves, and even tiny insects. It was like the world of science became real for them in a way it hadn't before.

One of the projects we're working on involves studying the health of our garden's soil by comparing compost-treated areas with untreated sections. The students are using microscopes to observe microorganism activity and root structures. Their work will help us figure out how to improve the garden's productivity, and we plan to use what we grow to help families in our community who are facing food insecurity. These microscopes have turned what used to be in-class discussions into real, hands-on problem-solving, and the students are fully engaged.

The next step for us is to study how different plants respond to varying soil conditions. The students are already buzzing with ideas, and I know they can't wait to use the microscopes for this next investigation.

Thank you again for making this possible. You've done more than just provide materials—you've inspired a new level of learning and connection to the community for my students. They truly feel like they're making a difference, and that's thanks to you.”

  • Malama Our Mala

    Funded Feb 18, 2024

    ---

I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for your generous support of our "Malama our mala: School Garden Project." Your contribution has significantly impacted our students, providing them with the tools they need to grow, learn, and heal.

Since the introduction of the new irrigation supplies, our garden has flourished, becoming a vibrant and nurturing space for our students. We use the garden as an extension of our classroom, integrating it into our curriculum in meaningful ways. One specific project that stands out is our study of native Hawaiian plants and their cultural significance.

The moment the students first saw the new materials, their excitement was palpable. Many of them had never seen an irrigation system before, and they were eager to learn how it worked. I introduced the new equipment, and the students were buzzing with curiosity and enthusiasm. They asked countless questions and were eager to start using the system to take care of their plants. The sense of ownership and pride they felt was evident in their beaming faces.

The next steps for our students involve expanding their knowledge and skills in sustainable agriculture. We plan to incorporate lessons on water conservation, the science of irrigation, and the importance of sustainability in our gardening practices. Additionally, students will engage in community outreach, sharing their knowledge and produce with local families, thereby strengthening our community bonds.

In conclusion, the "Malama our mala: School Garden Project" has provided our students with a sanctuary to learn and grow. It has helped alleviate the social and emotional anxieties exacerbated by Covid-19, offering a peaceful environment to destress. Your generosity has not only supported their academic growth but also their emotional well-being.

Thank you once again for your invaluable support. We look forward to sharing more updates on our students' progress and the continued growth of our mala.”

  • Letʻs Go Holoholo!

    Funded Nov 28, 2023

Your generosity has brought about a wave of excitement and transformation, and I am thrilled to share with you the profound difference your support has made in the lives of my students.

Thanks to your donations, we've been able to embark on an exhilarating journey of learning and discovery. The fishing poles have allowed our small group to remove 3x as many invasive fish as in the past.

The moment the materials arrived, the energy in the classroom was palpable. Wide-eyed and eager, my students gathered around as we unboxed the fishing poles and lure supplies.

Seeing their faces light up with curiosity and determination was truly priceless. For many of my students, this was their first hands-on experience with removing invasive fish.

As we move forward, the next steps for my students involve diving deeper into the realm of sustainability. With your continued support, we plan to design and build more complex projects, tackling real-world problems and honing our skills as young innovators.

Your support has not only provided my students with access to valuable resources but has also ignited a passion for learning that will stay with them for a lifetime. On behalf of myself and my students, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your generosity and belief in our mission. Together, we are empowering the next generation of thinkers, creators, and leaders.”

  • Farm to Fork

    Funded Aug 3, 2023

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. On behalf of our entire school community, I wanted to express our deepest gratitude for your generous contribution to our Farm to Fork initiative. Your support in providing cooking supplies has had a profound impact on our students and their families, and I wanted to take a moment to share our experiences with you.

Thanks to your generosity, our students have been able to access the necessary tools and resources to create healthy and delicious meals using the produce from our school garden. It has been an incredible journey to watch our students take the vegetables and herbs they've grown with their own hands and transform them into nutritious meals for their ohana (family) and our community.

One specific moment that stands out is when our students first laid eyes on the new cooking supplies. The excitement in the room was palpable. They couldn't contain their enthusiasm and immediately began brainstorming ideas for recipes they wanted to try. The joy on their faces as they explored the utensils, cookware, and ingredients was truly heartwarming. It was a reminder of the transformative power of providing the right resources to young minds eager to learn.

With your support, we've already embarked on several classroom projects that have strengthened our Farm to Fork initiative. Currently, our students are working on a lesson that focuses on creating well-balanced, healthy meals using fresh ingredients from our garden. They are learning not only how to cook but also about the nutritional value of the foods they are using. This knowledge empowers them to make informed choices about what they eat and share this information with their families.

As we move forward, our next steps include participating in a cooking event where our students will showcase their culinary skills using kalo (taro) a Hawaiian staple food. It's an exciting opportunity for our students to be ambassadors of healthy eating within our community and promote positive change.

Your generosity has not only enriched our classroom experiences but has also helped us sow the seeds of healthier living in our community. We are deeply grateful for your support, and we want you to know that your contribution has made a lasting impact on the lives of our students and their families.

Once again, thank you for your belief in our Farm to Fork initiative. Your support has been invaluable, and we look forward to continuing this journey towards a healthier future for our community.”
