New Series for New Readers
Funded Aug 23, 2022Scholars immediately noticed something new and interesting when I first began preparing the caddies and labels for the new books. "Ms.Gallo, what are those?" "Ms.Gallo, when will they be ready?" "Ms.Gallo, can I check out one of the new ones?!?" I could hear the whispers about these new series ripple throughout the room; the excitement for these books was contagious.
The intention behind this project was to help my scholars grow their love of reading by providing them with high-interest texts. Even before I had the chance to integrate these series into our library, my scholars' eagerness to read these series was clear. As a first year teacher still very much establishing her classroom library, I feel so grateful to be able to offer my students books they truly desire to read. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

A Space to Manage Big Feelings
Funded Aug 11, 2022During the first several weeks of school we learnt about our many emotions, we discussed what calm or centered feels like, and we explored various strategies to help us "find our center". As a class we read the books about mindfulness, breathing, and emotions. These texts now live in the Calming Corner where scholars revisit them. Scholars learnt to recognize how different emotions manifest in their own bodies. Using their personal "calming journal" (sketch pads), each scholar made a personalized "toolkit" with a plan for acknowledging and addressing big feelings. These plans often included using the resources from this project, especially the fidget toys and headphones.
One of my class's favorite items from this project is the Alphabreaths : the ABCs of Mindful Breathing book. Every so often we learn a new Alphabreath as a class. During transition times or finding our centers, scholars utilize their favorite Alphabreath. When a teacher or specialist visits our class, scholars jump at the opportunity to teach them a breath. The mindfulness techniques in this book have become an integral part of our classroom community.
The Calming Corner is the cornerstone of our classroom. These materials and tools have helped me teach my scholars about emotions and coping strategies. Moreover, the space itself represents a key piece of our community -- that we are working to grow both our minds and our hearts.”

Funded Dec 22, 2022I knew this project was a big ask and I am absolutely overjoyed that you made it a reality. My scholars have been asking for a rug since the beginning of the school year -- I cannot wait to break the news to them when we return from from Winter Break! Thank you for believing in the impact a classroom rug will have on our learning community. Thank you for funding this project that will not just benefit this year's scholars, but many scholars to come.”

Funded Aug 10, 2022These books were more than a nice addition to a new classroom library -- they grounded us in our new community and sense of togetherness at the beginning of the school year.
Over the first several weeks we incorporated these books in our morning meetings and our daily read-alouds. Throughout our reading, we reflected : What does community mean? What examples do we notice in the book? How do these ideas relate to our own lives and experiences? What should our classroom community look like.. feel like.. be like? Scholars explored these ideas while developing their voice in the classroom. Using these texts, they asserted their wants and needs, and developed a community agreement. Additionally, scholars practiced important reading skills, such as making text-self/text-text connections, and using text evidence to support ideas.
Even months into the school year and after having read them many times, my scholars still request these titles... we often revisit their themes to center ourselves. Thank you for providing a collection that helped inspire our classroom community!”
