Teaching Diversity With Biodiversity
Funded Apr 21, 2022The beginnings of a beautiful butterfly garden are unfolding at our school! Today we received all of our start up materials - soil, seeds, and a raised bed garden that will serve as the first installation in our butterfly habitat! We cannot thank you enough for your support of a new a beautiful garden. Between this garden and our bird feeders, we are sure to bring so much beauty and biodiversity to our outdoor classes.
In science, these concepts go a long way toward helping students understand the genetic importance of diversity. We teach the value of diversity in genes, but also in education, through the teaching of biodiversity. Students are learning a deeper respect for the frequency and abundance of variance. Supporting this project has supported far more than simply starting a butterfly garden. We are helping to share the importance of diversity with the young minds of tomorrow!
We are so grateful for all the support we receive from the donors on Donorschoose. This community has afforded my students so many opportunities and we couldn't feel any more blessed than we do by this organization. If you are interested in continuing to support our environmental goals, please consider the project Proper Tools for PBL Learning. These tools will help us to build the raised bed garden and other things like benches and additional gardens for the future. We plan to have a fully operational outdoor classroom by the time summer school is complete and access to tools to build these structures will help us tremendously! Furthermore, we are requesting Aerogarden Sprout systems in Sprouting Sustainable Students. These systems will be given to students to take home so they can continue their urban agriculture education from home over summer.
Thank you again so much for supporting us!”

Scientific Games That Challenge Our Minds
Funded Apr 7, 2022Thank you SO MUCH for giving my students some fun board games to play. Today during lunch we started our first chess lesson. As we speak, my students are locked in their first chess battle with one another and are learning to navigate the intricacies of this game. They are loving it!
My environmental science kids are planning on opening the Photosynthesis game and expansion pack on Thursday, the day before spring break, when we will play games together and have a small pre-break party. They are all excited and ready to play. Chemistry students are going to start the Compounded game when we return as it ties into our lessons about bonding. We are having so much fun and appreciate your support so much.
If you wish to continue supporting our classroom we would love if you would consider some of our current projects. We are requesting tools for creating a more immersive outdoor classroom in the project Proper Tools for PBL Learning and we are requesting snacks for the students to enjoy in class in our Little Debbie project. Have a look at them if you can!
Thank you again! We love you all!”

Ms. Flora
This classroom project was brought to life by The DonorsChoose community & an Anonymous Partner and 3 other donors.Compost Heroes
Funded Mar 20, 2022Thank you so very much for helping my students achieve their composting goals. Our Eco-School team has been more productive this year than ever before thanks to your generous support. Their goals and visions are manifested through your contributions to our classroom and we couldn't be more grateful to you!
We have our composting unit already set up and running. Right now, we are focused on wet composting. In other words, food stuffs and wastes go into the composter at this time. In the fall, we will switch to dry composting which will include grass clippings, leaves, and needles. We have learned in class the importance of composting both wet and dry materials and can't wait to see how the soil we create helps our gardens to grow.
These efforts are going to continue in our summer school, which will hopefully run through most of the duration of summer time. In order to support our summer school, we NEED tech items that will help facilitate hybrid and blended learning. Please consider supporting our summer school technology request for an Apple iMac if you wish to continue to support our classroom. If you are specifically interested in our Eco-School goals, we have a project requesting Sprout indoor hydroponic gardens. These gardens will go home with students so they can care for produce at home and help them to educate about the importance of urban agriculture.
Thank you so much for all your support!”

Funded Feb 20, 2022Thank you so much for contributing these seeds to our classroom hydroponic garden. We now have replacements for the seeds we are currently growing when they are transplanted into different gardens. We also have a new hydroponic system that will be arriving soon that these seeds will go into. We are so excited for the growth of these hydroponic gardens in school. Just today, our vice principal came in and said she wanted to get involved in helping the gardens grow! Now, with her help, we may have more space available in our building to grow our gardens even further!
I would like to make special note of the help received from the Caring Classrooms Giving page. Without the help of the individuals who run that page, this project would not have been brought to life so quickly. They helped this project as they have helped SO many others reach full funding. I am amazed and full of gratitude for their help. Support Caring Classrooms!
If you wish to continue to support our classroom environmental science efforts, we are currently requesting materials for our composting efforts in school in a project called Compost Heroes. This will provide us additional composting bins and indoor receptacles that will allow us to properly compost in our cafeteria. We are also requesting tools in Proper Tools for PBL Learning which will support our newly founded Eco-School STEAM Team. When this program grows, it will allow students to solve their own sustainability problems in the school. Please support these two projects!
Thank you everyone for your continued support of our classroom goals!”

Healthy Hydroponics
Funded Feb 10, 2022Our hydroponic garden is growing and growing! Thanks to your contribution, we have a whole new set of gardens that can be grown. We are planning to use this particular garden to grow peppers and tomatoes. Our hope is that eventually we will have dedicated gardens for greens, tomatoes, peppers, spices, herbs, and beans. Our classroom gets greener and greener each day.
Students are very pleased with the upgrades our garden has been receiving. We now have 3 upgraded systems to replace some of our older, outdated, and broken systems. These new and refreshed gardens are able to produce more than double the capacity of the old gardens. Students have autonomy over the systems and because they alert us when they are low on water or food, students know to check and add what is needed to keep the gardens at optimal growing capacity. We can't wait to watch our classroom gardens flourish for years to come!
We are so grateful for your support and contributions to our classroom gardens. If you wish to continue to support our efforts to modernize and grow our classroom, please consider supporting our two technology projects. We are currently requesting technology in projects titled Headphones for Hybrid and Tech the Halls. These two particular projects would go a long way in ensuring our classroom has more up-to-date materials so students can learn and grow in a modern classroom.
Thank you again for ALL that you do. We love you!”

Funded Feb 10, 2022I am so humbled by your gratitude to our class and students at our school. There aren't enough words to express our thanks for your contributions to our class. The rain barrels that you've contributed have already helped our class to become more sustainably-minded. Our kids are collecting rainwater (and snow melt) and are excited to see how much water accumulates next week when we are expected to get a few days worth of rain.
We are even more grateful for the addition of the water purifier for our classroom which we have already begun to install in the classroom. Our classroom is running out of boxed water bottles quickly and having this water dispenser is such a blessing for the kids in our school. Students from all classrooms, not just mine, are going to be able to fill their water bottles and water glasses throughout the day.
Our sustainable efforts in the school continue to manifest through projects like these. If you wish to continue to support our Eco-School and sustainability programming, please consider contributing to our Compost Heroes project, which is requesting composting stations for our building. We are also requesting seeds in our Sewing Seeds project which will be used in our hydroponic classroom gardens. Finally, we are also requesting new technology in our Tech the Halls project which will contribute a desktop monitor that will help our students through hybrid and summer school learning.
Thank you SO MUCH! We love you, we love Donorschoose, and we can't wait to continue our growth in class.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Flora

Funded Jan 30, 2022In just one day, these heaters managed to save a life! Because of our building's HVAC issues, we have had freezing cold temperatures in our classrooms. A young scholar decided to bring their pet lizard to school during one such day. The poor guy was so incredibly cold when it was discovered the student had it in his pocket that we feared it would die. Thankfully, the principal of our building ran the lizard into my classroom knowing I had gotten these heaters and we were able to warm him it to a normal temperature before we could find it heat lamps and a nice new house. These heaters helped him stay alive!
That being said, they have made such a great impact on the classroom temperature. We are no longer freezing through the day. The students know they can come to my room to get warm after they walk to school. Today, in particular, students came in drenched from the cold and rainy walk and were able to stand in the warmth before heading to their first block classes. Thank you for giving them the tools to heat up!
We are so grateful for the continued support we receive from Donorschoose. Currently, we have several additional live projects on our class page. We are hoping to get a few gift cards that will go to students to provide meals funded. This project is called "Prizes for Positivity" and would make an enormous impact for students who need access to food. Additionally, we are seeking a hydroponic garden in which we can grow our own fresh produce to give to the students throughout the school year. Please consider supporting these projects for us if you wish to continue helping our classroom. We are so grateful to you and look forward to showing you how much our room grows this year!”

Ms. Flora
So Fresh and So Clean
Funded Dec 30, 2021Thank you so very much for your contributions to this project. We are in the middle of a new wave of Covid and these products could not have come at a better time. We're so grateful that when we return from remote learning, we will have supplies to help keep us safer. Safety is my biggest classroom concern for my students and it should be everyone else's too. Without a unified effort to show our kids we care about their safety, they will not know how important it truly is. Thank you for joining the effort!
The masks are going to be especially important when we return as mask mandates are becoming strict again. Many times my students arrive to class with masks that are broken, overused, or dirty. Our building charges students for replacement masks and for many reasons in an urban inner city district, that charge is too much for some students to handle. They are then stuck with masks that are not sufficient to keep them safe. Thank you for giving them masks they do not have to pay for.
I am so grateful for your support and hope you will consider supporting our classroom in the future. We have some remote learning support requests currently live on our page. Tech the Halls! requests technology to assist during virtual learning and Headphones for Hybrid requests headphones for students to use during hybrid and remote learning so they can hear me clearly. These are important items that are sorely needed right now as we remain remote and in isolation. Please help if you can!
Thank you again, we love you and Donorschoose!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Flora

Funded Dec 29, 2021Thank you so much for supporting this project! I can't believe how much support we received for making sure our students are warm on their walks to and from school. This couldn't have happened at a better time, too, as our kids are experiencing a fresh wave of Covid-19. We need to make sure the students are warm and well to best protect their immune systems in the face of this disease.
Prior to break, another teacher in my building got many hats and gloves for kids in the building who needed them, as well. She enlisted the help of the student council to identify those kids who needed them the most and made sure those kids had access to them. Following her lead, I will be doing the same with these items to make sure the students who need this the most receive these items.
That being said, students need more than just warmth to stay healthy. My kids live in a district where access to fresh, clean water is limited. To get clean water, students need to buy it. The water supply is contaminated. We are hoping to fund a project that will give students not only access to reliable clean water, but the ability to learn how to source drinking water from rain and clean/purify that water themselves. Please support Rain Water to the Rescue if you wish to help my kids have fresh clean water every day.
Thank you again! We love you!”

Ms. Flora

Funded Dec 20, 2021The day our soups arrived in class, students were at my desk instantly to get a cup. They love these soups so much. I can't tell you how often students from all over the building arrive to my room looking for some soup to bring home for dinner or to eat before school ends. Warm food makes them ALL feel better during the school day.
I will continue to provide soups and other warm food items to my students when I can. Right now, my pantry is stocked with soup, mac-and-cheese cups, and some breakfast items like oatmeal for the students throughout the day. I will be creating more requests for other items to round out the nutritional needs that students have and hopefully create a balanced pantry for my kids.
In the meantime, if you wish to continue to support the needs of the kids in my classroom, we have several live requests that will go a long way with your support. Currently, we are requesting items to support our classroom as we prepare to shift back to a hybrid or remote model with COVID-19 spreading rapidly again. We are seeking headphones that students can use to hear me during class and a desktop computer that will support pre-recorded video lectures and Google Meet in two separate requests called: Headphones for Hybrid and Tech the Halls! Please consider helping us making a smooth transition back to hybrid and remote this month!
We appreciate all of you so very much and look forward to all the amazing things Donorschoose allows us to provide for our kids. Thank you!”

Ms. Flora
