Students need spirals to organize their thoughts, reflect on new learning, make connections to prior knowledge, and ultimately to get them writing! Starting mid-year as a first year teacher has been challenging to say the least, it is even more challenging when supplies and resources are limited. Using spirals in the classroom is much more efficient-in regards to keeping track of work, thoughts, notes, and so much more-than just regular notebook paper. With the use of spirals we do not have to worry where papers are, why this paper has no name, or wonder where to turn things in. With spirals student work stays in student's individual notebooks. In Math this allows students to show as much work as needed for problems without having to reach for another sheet of paper that could potentially end up lost. The same goes for Reading-students are able to have reference notes to look back at when completing future work. Science spirals will be filled with observational notes, drawings, and techniques. Social Studies spirals will be where students reflect on the past, present, and future of our great country. Using spirals gives students a sense of organization and ownership of something that is theirs to utilize, evaluate, and keep track of.
