My kids are 100% English language learners in a low income area. We are a Spanish dual immersion school. Most of my students have a foundation in the Spanish language, but lack basic conversational English skills. Many of their families do not speak any English, but they are eager to help, learn, and receive resources as to how they can help their children. Often times, they lack access to basic resources such as books. They enjoy being read to, but they currently cannot read on their own. The shift to Common Core standards has resulted in the need for more books that are accessible to students since they are no longer using basal readers.
