Save Our Books!
Funded May 7, 2024With students back in the library, it's the perfect time of year to introduce new books -- protected by the Kapco covers you so generously helped provide us! In the pictures attached, you'll see the library's "save our books" station where we cover each paperback with this special book saving tool. These covers help each book last 5-6 times longer than a normal paperback, especially important since many of our books in Spanish for our newcomer students are published only in paperback.
Thank you for helping us use our education dollars wisely by making sure our library books last as long as possible! Our students have been so thrilled to discover new books in the library this year, many of which are now protected with Kapco covers.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Emily

Funded Jun 26, 2024Students are back in the library for the new school year, and it is such a delight to begin introducing these Children's Choice books to them! Coming up first, all of Kindergarten through 3rd grade will read "Spanish Is The Language of My Family" to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, a story inspired by the National Spanish Spelling Bee. Our Spanish speaking students will feel included and cherished in our school community, and all students will learn about the history of Spanish in U.S. schools during the past century. (The main character's grandmother tells him about how she was punished for speaking Spanish at school.) And all of us will learn some words in Spanish to celebrate!
Time will tell if this story ends up being one of my students' favorites of the year. Thank you so much for helping facilitate their introduction to these diverse award-nominated titles.”

Funded Jan 16, 2024The new Spanish books in our library have had an immediate impact. As with the last round, I could barely get the books processed before kids were clamoring for them. Our 5th graders gravitated immediately to the big encyclopedias covering world history and science, while our younger Spanish speakers are enjoying our new picture books.
My favorite moment was getting the sharks encyclopedia ready for checkout by a certain 3rd grader who is often zoned out during class. He lit up when we showed him the Sharks/Tiburones title was available, and as soon as he checked it out a little crowd gathered around him, and he began teaching his peers about sharks from the book. You could feel his pride, joy, and engagement.
Thanks again for your support of these children continuing their literacy in their home language!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Emily
Books Galore to Explore
Funded Sep 21, 2023It has been a thrill to launch our reading enjoyment program for the first time, thanks to your help. We are two months into our "12 to Try" program, and the books you have helped purchase for our library are a huge hit!
64 kids have read and reviewed a total of 117 award-nominated books so far from the OTTER, Sasquatch, and Young Reader's Choice Awards. I have overheard many students recommending the books to each other. Hits have included Battle Dragons: City of Thieves, a fast-paced futuristic fantasy with great representation, and The Great Pet Heist, a funny mystery with a set of animals coming together "Ocean's Eleven"-style.
Thanks to you, over a third of our eligible students so far have expanded their reading horizons and are on their way to earning an invitation to the end of year reader's party. This week we also celebrated everyone who has participated with a special bookmark.
Thanks again for making this possible!”

Ms. Emily
Popular Spanish Titles for Multilingual Learners
Funded May 10, 2023Thank you so much for helping fund the purchase of Spanish titles for our school library. We were able to triple the size of our collection in Spanish with your help!
Our multilingual learners were so excited to start reading these books in the spring that I could barely get them in the library catalog before they went out again.
I spent the summer adding some heavy duty books covers to make sure these books will last as long as possible, and I was thrilled to launch our tripled Spanish collection to students and families at our Back to School event last week. Kids were so excited, and families said, "¡Gracias!"
Thanks again for making a huge impact on the literacy and sense of belonging for our multilingual learners.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Emily
