Learning Tools for Special Education
Funded Nov 29, 2022Your donations helped enrich my students learning in many ways. The headphones allowed them to use their individualized technology. Students used the whiteboards during math class on a daily basis and often requested to use them for a variety of reasons including solving math problems and taking notes while they were reading.
The students also enjoyed getting to use the calculators. Many of them had only used the very basic calculators and were amazed by how many types of problems they could solve on the calculator. For my students who struggle with math, they were able to use the calculators to solve order of operation problems that would have been too challenging for them During our afterschool enrichment, we played several math games to help the students develop their math skills.
Overall, the various items helped my students to gain access to their materials and be excited to learn new skills.”

Funded Feb 22, 2019I entered the room with sealed boxes and told all of the students to put their heads down. As I unpacked the boxes, little eyes attempted to sneak a peak. After a few minutes, I asked all of the students to pick their heads up. Their eyes filled with excitement and gasps of joy squeaked out. I described each book that was purchased and students became more and more excited to see titles they had requested earlier in the year. The best part was when I told them that these books were theirs. At first, they did not understand what I meant by "theirs". I explained that they would all keep the new books for themselves.
Amin said, "Ms. Eli, this is the most excited I've been about books in a long time". Another said, "This is the series I asked about reading before, but you didn't have them." The next student exclaimed, "Can we start reading now?". They couldn't believe they were receiving brand new books for free that would really be theirs. My students often get used items. Many of them do not have books available to them at home and their only experiences with books are at school.
In my classroom, reading is encouraged. We read textbooks, articles, comics, etc. I want my students to feel the joy of finding a favorite book that they can return to like an old friend. For many of them, life is hectic; between family, school, and outside activities. Reading is an opportunity for them to slow down, learn new things, and become immersed in their imagination. Thanks to you, each student (sixty total) will be able to read a book that is all theirs.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Eli
