Fit to Learn: Combining Literacy, Math, and Movement
Funded Sep 7, 2024The addition of these new books has transformed our physical education classroom into an engaging space where movement, creativity, and learning come together, especially for our students with special needs. By incorporating ELA and Math into our PE lessons, we've been able to create dynamic, multisensory experiences that get students moving while reinforcing literacy and numeracy skills.
Many of the stories we've introduced are centered around animals and nature, which have been perfect for encouraging physical activity. After reading about different animals, students are excited to mimic their movements—crawling like a bear, hopping like a frog, or stretching like a giraffe. These activities help students improve their coordination, balance, and motor skills, while also allowing them to express themselves creatively through movement.
Incorporating math has also been a fun challenge. After reading stories, we've added counting and pattern recognition into our activities—whether it's counting how many times we can jump like a kangaroo or creating movement sequences based on the steps of an animal's journey.
One of the most heartwarming moments came from a student who usually finds it difficult to stay focused in traditional lessons. He lit up when asked to slither like a snake or flap his wings like a bird, fully engaging with both the physical and literacy aspects of the lesson. This kind of engagement wouldn't have been possible without these new books, which have brought joy, movement, and learning together in a meaningful way.
Thank you so much for your support in making this possible! Your generosity has given our students not just books, but new ways to learn, move, and grow. The impact has been profound, and we are truly grateful.”
