Our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. We are a Title I campus, and many of our students do not have the opportunity to do things outside of class. Our school asked and has received permission to pilot a winter guard program. This group of students will learn dance while spinning and tossing flags on a 6-foot pole (Think about the color guard with the marching band). This opportunity will allow my students to learn the beauty of dance as well as the athleticism needed to compete in contests. Even though they are not on one of the school sports teams, this will help them learn teamwork, as well as have the discipline needed to master the dances and the flag work. This will carry over into the classroom as well by teaching my students the discipline needed to succeed. Texas is a "No Pass No Play" state, and winter guard does fall under the umbrella of UIL. This means that if my students do not have an average of at least 70 in all of their classes, they are not eligible to participate in this activity.
