Reading is a fundamental skill that everyone should have. Unfortunately, a lot of children with special needs are not given the opportunity to practice that skill or are even exposed to it. That is why I believe having these books in my classroom library will give my students the exposure and practice they so desperately want and need. Having the ability to read does not only help in comprehending, but it also provides a whole new set of opportunities and possibilities for students. A great deal of my students are nonverbal communicators. By having books that display a wide range of storytelling, text, pictures, and emotions, my students might also be able to express themselves in other ways than the basic pointing gestures. Even with not being able to speak their thoughts, reading stories that will cause them to think and engage their minds is an accomplishment for them in itself. For example, a lot of my students do "random" actions because of certain triggers, motivation, or stimulus. The story, "If you give a mouse a cookie" can help in showing cause and effect and helping students understand motivation and maybe even helping my students communicate their own motivations for their behavior. Having these books would be a great resource for my students to have and a treasure that would be timeless for future students.
