In 6th Grade students learn about kinetic energy and energy transfer. Students will be able to use the Engineering Design Process to create a 3D car. Using the 3D printer, students will deign, code and build a base and axles for a car. They will then use their knowledge about circuits to make their car move. Once they have completed their car they will go test the differences between flooring and explore the different kinetic energies. Once they have improved their designs, we will have races! This will be an opportunity for outdoor learning as well, testing their designs on the pavement, grass and track! This is one lesson plan that will utilize all of the materials that I am asking for. The materials will be reused through different projects as well. To be able to get to this cumulative experience, the students will need opportunities to explore the materials. Instead of teaching the students about circuits and how they work, I plan for them to investigate and explore. I will ask them to try to make a light bulb light up, create an open and closed circuit, and explore different materials that allow and don't allow energy transfer. They will also be using TinkerCad to design their 3D prints. There are endless opportunities once I have the opportunity to utilize these materials in my classroom!!
