  • Creating Meaningful and Motivating Opportunities in Speech through iPads

    Funded Jun 13, 2017

This donation has made a huge impact on my students' speech and language sessions. It is not only enriching their education but making the quality of the speech and language sessions more meaningful as we continue to have access to a variety of technology and be able to use the ipads for a variety of functions. Not only does it help my students but it helps me teach my students as I am also able to use it to help me plan my lessons and give them a better quality education that they deserve. They are so excited about the ipads and are always eager to come to speech. They are more motivated to learn this year compared to prior years because we have access to the ipads in our speech room. This has made a significant impact on their progress and motivation to improve. They are now able to use a variety of applications to learn new vocabulary such as an opposites game, read texts on Myon or complete ELA and/or math related work on Iready. They are also using it to look up spelling of words while editing and revising their writing and to look up important information on the internet to produce expository writing. They often ask if they can use the ipad for their therapy session however they also enjoy being able to earn it during reward time for good behavior and free time for completion of work. This has made a huge difference in our speech room and we can't thank you enough for your generous donation. The students are in love with the ipads. We appreciate your help in helping us meet our goals and giving us access to more technology.”

  • Speech and Language Therapy Materials

    Funded Sep 14, 2016

    Dear donors,

Since receiving all of the materials, my students have been able to learn sequencing, vocabulary words, sounds and other skills through materials that tap into a variety of learning styles. My students that are visual and kinesthetic learners look forward to using the dice, answer lights, sequencing cards, story wheels to help them improve their writing and ability to develop narrative skills. For instance, my students have been able to advance their skills from using picture cards in sequencing to writing their story from the picture cards down on paper. This has also helped them to develop more organization skills when writing. Your contribution will assist my students to become more hard working, motivated and smarter scholars. I have been able to utilize these resources over and over with my students.

I notice that they are more motivated, engaged and having fun in speech therapy due to the variety of games and resources I was able to provide them with your donation. They are constantly asking to utilize these resources over and over and therefore they look forward to coming to speech every time. Many of them even ask if they can come to speech all day because they are enjoying learning when using these resources. They appreciate your contribution to their learning opportunities and are thankful to you for helping them improve their skills to become successful and well rounded individuals of our community.

In the future my students will be able to tell and write a story independently without visual cues. They will also be able to identify sounds to help them decode sounds in reading and writing. In addition, these materials will help them organize their thoughts in an essay to help them pass and improve their scores on standardized exams.”

I am Speech Language Pathologist for Pre-K-5th grade in New York City. I am in need of more speech and language games and materials for my students to improve their recognition of letters and sounds, vocabulary, writing skills via a variety of graphic organizers and workbooks to practice these skills at home. I try to use materials that are free and low cost from a variety of sources such as blogs, pinterest and teachers pay teachers. However, my students need more activities and games that are fun and engaging! They are more motivated to learn while having fun in speech and respond better to tactile and kinesthetic learning activities such as Bingo, Guess Who?, Headbandz, roll a dice games, language cards and a mystery box to work on inferencing. I am asking for a variety of tools such as games, workbooks, cards and toys to help my students learn using their learning style. These tools would help them access language and the curriculum in the classroom, at home and in the community. My students need help with areas such as inferencing, listening comprehension, phonological awareness, writing and organization, vocabulary, following directions and expressive language. Providing and supporting my students with these games and workbooks will allow them to work on their speech and language goals while enjoying themselves in speech therapy. Given these skills are difficult for many of my students, these activities would help my students and motivate them to practice their speech and language goals in a fun and engaging way as well as reduce the pressure of academics from elementary school and stress from within their communities.
