After having to do school from home this last year, these students are ready to be in person - to engage, to socialize, and to explore their learning abilities. I want to make this year the best it can be. I’ve got the inspiration, motivation, and plans to create a classroom environment where they feel welcome, involved, encouraged, supported and accepted as part of a community.
More than ever before, students need their classrooms to be a place where they can feel at home together. A place that they are excited to come back to each and every day. A place where their social and emotional learning can best be fostered.
My project’s inspiration is a quilt my grandmother made of the 50 US state flowers. Nothing says home like a quilt {I will hang a banner sized image of it in my classroom}. One of the 5th grade standards is that students learn the 50 US states & capitals. I plan to turn my inspiration & this standard into a classroom theme by adding 50 states scenery, floral mindset posters, garlands, pillows, as well as handmade paper flowers {the possibilities are endless with a Cricut}. Then with the gift card for Teachers Pay Teachers, I can purchase subject materials {Social & Emotional Learning, Social Studies, etc.} that will correlate with the theme.
Many of my students may be wary of coming back because of anxieties due to the pandemic. My ultimate goal is to provide them with new and unique materials to support their mental health and to inspire their learning. By creating a unique classroom experience, I can make it welcoming and supportive for the most nervous of students. I want to make this year the best it can be. I want our classroom to say "Welcome Home".
