Schools are busy places these days. Every day, kids are asked to do more and more so they have a shot at a bright future and a good career. One of the best ways we can help them is by giving them the tools they need to stay organized, engaged, and excited about learning. When second and third-graders don’t have the right tools—basic things like pencil sharpeners and markers—it slows them down and keeps them from getting the most out of their time in school. Spending less time finding a sharpened pencil means students have more time to do all of the fun things that school is really about. Small things like this translate into big gains when kids can focus all of their energy on learning with their friends and expressing themselves in their own words.
In addition to having the appropriated writing instruments, these bright seven and eight year-old's are hungry to read about new worlds. Every morning my students waste little time rushing to their book bins to go “book shopping.” It’s not uncommon to see overstuffed bins: they can barely contain the excitement they feel when picking out new books! As their teacher, it can be hard to keep up. This is why I’m committed to feeding their interest and exposing them to topic that will inspire and teach them something new. It’s so important to maintain a diverse selection of reading materials in our library, and so vital to the growth and development of these enthusiastic young learners!
