I teach in a low-income school within a suburban district. My school has a large population of English Language Learners. Some of my students have arrived in the United States at the beginning of this school year, and others have been here for a few years. As an ESL teacher it is my responsibility to help them become proficient in English while they are learning in academic areas, as well as improve their English communication skills. Some of my students have such great skills in their first language. When they fail to perform at the same academic level in English, they become discouraged. There is nothing worse then seeing a dejected child, who comes to dislike school.
