Teaching in a low-income community (Title I), my students are predominantly African American and Hispanic. About 40% of the students speak English as a second language. More than 35% of the students arrive to my classroom reading below grade level. Despite these disadvantages, my students come to school everyday ready to learn and embrace the challenges and rigor set before them. While intervention programs are available in my classroom, there are never enough headphones for students to use. The programs require students to use headphones so several users can access them concurrently. The headphones provided are usually faulty, damaged, or just inoperable. This hinders learning initiatives that are setting students up to be proficient readers and mathematicians.
