Inspire Us with a Trip to He Named Me Malala

Funded Sep 29, 2015

Thank you again for inspiring my students with a trip to see He Named Me Malala. The day of the field trip was excellent. Donors Choose and Cicero Trips made sure that the field trip was fully planned and executed without a hitch.

My students were excited for the field trip as the day approached, and their excitement continued throughout the day. We had completed a variety of activities prior to going on the trip, such as learning about the status of women under the Taliban and reading a little about Malala's upbringing and personal history. They were fully invested in learning more about Malala and how she made a difference in her community. After we watched the movie, students were asking questions and talking about various parts of the movie that stood out to them. Even though the trip was a few weeks ago, they still bring her up in the classroom as an example of a woman who used non violence and stood up for her rights.

When we returned to our campus after the field trip, students began working on a community service project. We wanted to tie what they saw in the movie back to their own lives. And our students live in communities that have a variety of challenges. Students worked in small groups to brainstorm solutions to problems. Students are going to continue developing their projects over the next semester, and eventually pick one project to work on as a cohort. For the Cesar Chavez Day of Service in March, students will execute their projects.

My students have truly been inspired with this trip, and I am so grateful to have been able to give them this opportunity.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Darkjian
