  • Class Set of There There by Tommy Orange

    Funded Mar 31, 2024

    Reading There, There by Tommy Orange made a huge impact on my students as was evident in their essays and responses to the book. Students were highly engaged and we had deep and meaningful discussions on generational and historical trauma connected with the characters and plot of There, There. Students also made deep connections to their own lives, the impact of alcoholism and generational trauma.

    Students also noted how some of the characters were trying to break the cycle of violence and create betters lives for themselves, their families and community. I think this gave them hope.

    There, There by Tommy Orange was such a great book and I'm glad my students had a chance to read the book and it was thanks to donors like you. Thank you so much for supporting our youth and making sure they have the books and literature they need to learn and grow.”

I am an English teacher in Los Angeles Unified School District. I teach 6th grade, 7th grade and 12th grades English. This is my 20th year teaching in LAUSD. I try to bring engaging and diverse books into my classroom to help my students learn and grow. Oftentimes, the books that are available at school do not reflect my students or their needs or interests. Supplementing the books with engaging class sets of books that I have acquired through fundraising over the years; such as Bad Indians by Deborah Miranda, The Mountains Sing by Nguyen Phan Que Mai and There, There by Tommy Orange have made all the difference in the world. I continue to teach those books and am expanding my class set collections for the middle grades. Thank you for your support!
