Notebooks, Pens and Pencils Oh My!
Funded Aug 1, 2023When I shared with my students that we were given new items for them to use for school they were in shock. They were eager to start the activities and so very appreciative. This year the notebooks will come in handy because my students are newcomers to the country. They have very limited English skills and the notebooks allow them to have an illustration to go along with the concept or idea.
Many of them do not have enough money to buy school supplies as they are literally coming to the country with the clothes on their backs. For many of them, this is their first opportunity at an education. It truly takes a village and I am so glad you choose to support mine.”

Funded Dec 4, 2022My students are very grateful for their new gloves. As stated in my initial project, many of my students come to school with just a sweatshirt as a jacket. In the spring and fall months that would work however in the cold brutal winters of New York, a sweatshirt just wont cut it. Gloves allows my students the opportunity to keep their hands warm while walking to and from school. The gloves also allowed students to use their phones in case they needed to check in with parents/guardians.
My students were shocked that we were able to provide a pair of gloves to every 6th and 7th grader. They were surprised and appreciative of the generosity of all the donors and promised to pay it forward in the future.
With sincere thanks,

Funded Oct 26, 2022I am a firm believer that it is important for everyone to celebrate their special day in some way shape or form. That does not always mean that one has to go out to a fancy restaurant or get an expensive gift. For my students, they appreciate the acknowledgement. They are excited when I give them a hand written birthday certificate, and they get to choose the color pencil and bracelet. They wear the bracelets with pride and are excited to use the pencils.
Thank you for shining some joy into my students' lives. Thank you for your generosity and kindness.”

Funded Sep 29, 2022My students struggle with seeing books that represent their culture and background. With that, the books I chose targeted strong women role models, specially Latina , African American and Native American women. A large majority of my students are from Latin American and South American countries so seeing books that represent their culture especially in history make it more worthwhile for them.
The most recent example of how I used the books was that students were broken down by group and were investigating a certain topic such as Native Americans and Trail of Tears, Women and independence, Lowell mill systems. They were given their reading as well as the book to see multiple perspectives of the topic and see that history is not just one way and that's it.
I am able to review skills such as Compare and Contrast and Inferencing with the students because they are able to read one perspective from the reading I provide and then see a different perspective from the books.”

Funded Sep 29, 2022Thank you so very much for your generous donations for my classes. The day the boxes came I had my students setting up everything and organizing it in a way that would work best for them without any interruptions to the class and so they would not feel embarrassed by taking what they need. They stayed at lunch to organize it.
My students were very happy and grateful to see the materials. They were able to see first hand the generosity and kindness of strangers. Everyone is struggling in today's times and for them to have the basic necessities such as sanitary needs is crucial. They know where to go in case they need anything and they can just take no questions asked.
My next steps is to build this project and expand to my academy (450 kids) as opposed to just my 120 students. My students know that they can share with their friends and that their friends (other students in our academy ) can come see me at lunch for whatever they need.”

Funded Mar 19, 2014My students were very eager and excited to watch their new DVDs on American History. They thought I was lying when I said our project had been funded. They were in shock when I said that there were people out there who donated so we can have additional resources to learn from. They were thrilled and proud to be chosen.
These videos helped to reinforce important concepts that were taught in the beginning of the school year. These videos helped all my students, especially those that tended to be more visual and auditory learners. In addition, my students who are preparing for the 11th Grade United States History and Government Regents benefited as well because much of the material they watched will be on the upcoming regents. These videos were used as a review of important 7th grade topics covered throughout the year.
Thank you for helping my students see that there are good people in the world who have faith and confidence that they can succeed in anything they put their minds to. They are sweet kids who work hard and have struggled in their lifetime.”

Ms. Carboni
