I have the most amazing, dedicated, courageous students in the world. My Title I school is in the lowest 5% of schools in the state as far as poverty level and free/reduced price lunches students receive. These kids come from homes where it can be difficult to put a meal on the table, let alone buy books and other learning materials. We have an extremely high ELL (English language learners) population so it is very important to have materials that are relevant and interesting to my kids. On the last day of school I was in tears due to a thank you letter that the children had written me. In the letter they quoted each of the books that I had read to them this year. They thanked me for teaching them not to judge a book by it's cover, from the book Wonder. They appreciated that I taught them to think through about all of life's moves before making one (Chess Rumbles), and to be kind to one another and to stand up for one's beliefs (Crash). They took the texts that I had introduced and turned them into life's lessons.
