Flexible seating will enhance the learning capacities of my students in numerous ways. Children are not meant to sit still for long periods of time, especially on the hard and inflexible chairs provided by the district. We pause frequently in my room for the students to "get their wiggles out." They're active kids, but they're eager to learn. With flexible seating, the students will be able to move while staying focused. Time spent engaged in learning will increase while time spent on movement breaks and redirection will decrease. Flexible seating can transform my room into a highly functional space where students can feel supported and understood. The variety of items I have chosen for flexible seating include milk crates, ball chairs, stools, and wobble cushions to allow my students to make their own choices. Giving them this control turns the room from "my" room to "our" room. The fidget bands let students move their feet and move around without causing a distraction and bed risers can be used on the desks to allow students to stand while working. The dry erase clip boards will allow these students to do this work anywhere in the room, even on the floor. Not every child can learn sitting up in a chair, so, with this project, I hope to give them the opportunity to learn the way they feel most comfortable.
