A Book Of Their Own!
Funded Jan 31, 2019First off, I would like to thank you all for your donations! We read The Crossover together as a class and the students LOVED it!! Every student having a copy of their own really made a difference with student engagement. Each page of The Crossover is a new poem that tells the story. The students learned skills aligned with poetry like rhyme scheme and figurative language. As well as some reading literature skills like studying plot, character traits, theme, and
In our study of the crossovers and later with the other books, we alternated between listening to the audiobook, teacher reading, and students reading.
I had several students who absolutely LOVED this book! So much so that they requested I get the other books written by this author. I can't thank you enough, your donation has made such an impact!”

Funded Mar 26, 2017I want to thank you all again for your kind and generous donations. My students and I were so pleasantly surprised at how quickly our project was fully funded. I wanted to share with all of you a little bit more about how we will be using the books in the class.
In our classroom, we use a program called Accelerated Reader. Every month the students take the STAR assessment which measures comprehension and based on their score each student is given a ZPD (zone of proximal development). This is the zone in which the students should be reading books to best improve their comprehension. For example, if a student is reading at 3.7 (third-grade level) then their zone of proximal development would be 2.9-4.2. Reading books within this range provides for optimal reading growth. Once a student reads a book within their range they take an AR test on their specific book, which consists of basic comprehension questions. If they get a 70% or higher on the test they earn points for reading that book. Each student has a unique reading goal based on their reading level. Based on the example above, if that student was required to read 20 minutes a night they would have to earn 5.6 points within the month.
Recently, reaching their reading goal for the month has become a competition with each student trying to be the first one to complete 100% of their goal. We have been averaging about 75% of the students reach at least 70% of their goal or above and 50% of them reaching 100%. With all of these new books, I am hoping to see an increase in those percentages. The books that were chosen will give the students more options when choosing their next AR book.
Please take a moment to look at the photos that I have uploaded and see your generosity at work!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Perez
