  • Welcome to Our Book Nook!

    Funded Jun 25, 2022

Thank you so much for helping me transform my classroom into an inviting environment where students feel excited to learn and in particular read! The students truly love our Book Nook! It's a very tricky age being a middle school student and finding the right appeal to hook them into reading is a challenge. A cool reading environment has helped create the right atmosphere for learning! The comfortable seating that I bought with your donations (rug squares and round cushion seats) has finally gotten them to want to sit in the area and read ( we have tile floors).

We couldn't have transformed this room without your help. The students have been taking turns making sure all the materials are properly returned & cared for along with showing pride in their classroom and learning!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Budryk

  • Seeking Successful School Year in Need of Supplies!

    Funded Feb 16, 2019

Sincere thanks for saving the school year! We have been using the resources and materials provided through the project. In particular I was able to buy just right drawing paper to differentiate our projects. For example, the students just recently did a project on the regions of Africa in Social Studies in which students had a choice in their format for the project. Some students chose to create a slideshow using google slides while others chose to create a signboard using art materials and drawing paper. Surprisingly, many students picked the signboard project over using technology. It's really great to offer different modalities to demonstrate their understanding of a subject. In this way students are engaged and put forth more effort and demonstrate a deeper understanding of their content. Other materials that were purchased are basic materials from pencils, to staplers, glue sticks and binders. I can guarantee you we are using all of them.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Budryk

  • Keep it Fresh! Keep it Real! REALISTIC Fiction BOOK CLUBS

    Funded Aug 15, 2018

We can not thank you enough for funding our Realistic Fiction Book Clubs! It literally put double the titles I had available in our students hands and kept them coming back for more books! We read a few model texts to understand the structure of fiction and then students were able to practice lessons using their own chosen books. At the end of our unit students had to write an essay about theme and were given free reign to use any of the stories they had read. This allowed them more choice and in turn more authentic pieces of writing for their final grade! During the unit we had a book fair with scholastic books combined with our open house and almost every child was so inspired about reading they couldn't wait to buy a book. The donors choose project inspired & sparked their curiosity about reading right away in the beginning of the year which is crucial. Thank you for igniting the flame!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Budryk

Our classroom is a unique diverse learning community where students come from all over the world. We learn from each other every day and although our diversity of culture and language are amazing, we are also a Title 1 inner city school where most students receive free lunch & breakfast. Many of them come to school hungry, and many of them live under conditions filled with poverty and have had traumatic experiences that occupy their minds. There is nothing more rewarding than to see the same students engaged in high-interest books relevant to their lives, quality materials that will make learning fun while being aligned with the new Common Core Standards. Reading levels range from 1st gr. to H.S. with a high special education population as well, which make getting quality books in such a range a challenge! We also have limited use of our library as it is used for 2 ELLs classrooms due to overcrowding this year.
