“Ms., I’m sorry, I just don’t like reading… and you don’t have anything I like.” I want to change this. My students don’t have access to a school library, and, therefore, they must depend on my inherited selection of books. Spending time with a self-selected book gives a reader time to escape, explore, and wonder about something, someone, somewhere outside themselves. An entertaining book engages the imagination and creativity of a reader that is often reined in during instructional time. My students have sometimes assured me that they hate reading, but then they describe a desire to have engaging, fun books instead of "boring books." The lack of choice in what a student is reading can take all the excitement out of a good book. My students have described to me the stories they enjoyed in the past but do not know of a pathway to read more books like the ones they have enjoyed. The reviews on Goodreads have piqued their interest in certain titles. The next step is getting these books into their hands.
