As described in the NYC Continuum of Services for Students with Disabilities, Integrated Co-Teaching “ensures that students master specific skills and concepts in the general education curriculum, as well as ensuring that their special education needs are being met, including meeting alternate curriculum goals.” As a teacher of an ICT classroom, many students with disabilities are at a much lower level than their peers. Some are reading at a 1st grade level in 6th grade. Many of the students in our classroom are English Language learners, have different ranges of disabilities, including autism. We (my co-teacher and I) encourage them to read as much as possible, providing these students with different scaffolds, but we have noticed a trend, a lot of our lower level learners are not progressing due to their lack of reading. They are embarrassed to read "baby books" in front of their peers. To better encourage reading and get books at their varying levels that don't embarrass them, we thought of getting the tablets to get them comfortable to read among their peers. It will also be helpful to include for all students in the classroom, including the English Language Learners. My students will use these tablets to enhance their literacy centers. We have a classroom with very limited space and two timeworn computers. They allow them to use the tablets to read ebooks to improve their reading abilities. This project will make a difference in the lives of these children by helping improve their literacy skills and confidence.
