  • Small-Group Instruction Through Handheld Technology

    Funded Jan 31, 2012

It is with much gratitude and many heartfelt thanks that I write this message to you on behalf of our class.

Thanks to your generosity, we have been able to access the incredible educational power of the iPod Touch. In small groups, my students have worked with these devices to build skills in math computation, sight word recognition, reading comprehension, and critical thinking. We have also used a dictation app for individual students to draft their writing verbally, allowing their ideas to flow more naturally. Perhaps most exciting of all, we are in the process of using a movie-making app to create a video about a recent field trip. Not only is this app a wonderful tool for reflection and creativity, but using it to its full potential helps all students learn how to work more effectively in groups.

Using the iPod Touch has been incredibly engaging for my students. When I see virtually all of them excited to practice math facts - because now it is with a fun and creative app rather than a set of flash cards - I know this gift you have given us is making a huge difference.

Thank you again for supporting the education of our wonderful students. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Bosworth

This classroom project was brought to life by Wasserman Foundation and 24 other donors.
We are a first grade class in a small (571 students), suburban, non-Title I neighborhood school built in 1953. The 23 students in my classroom come from diverse backgrounds and bring to school a variety of abilities, interests and challenges. What they do have in common is a thirst for knowledge, and an excitement to learn anything that can be brought to life through a wide range of hands-on learning experiences, exposure to high-quality literature, and regular access to interactive technology. With the right resources, these highly motivated students become completely absorbed in colorful, engaging, challenging activities in all curricular areas. We continually strive to keep interest high and learning meaningful, but funding our dreams is a challenge! We appreciate the generosity of donors like you who can help us meet our goals. Thank you so much for your interest!
