Support for Students With Dyslexia
Funded Nov 26, 2019With your support, I was able to begin an extensive online training in The Orton-Gillingham Approach. This workshop came with a number of materials, including Orton-Gillingham aligned flashcards and texts that I can use to support students with dyslexia. I'm already putting some of those materials to use and seeing students make significant progress.
Through this course, I've learned the importance of routine, repetition, and multi-sensory experiences for students with dyslexia. Some of my new learning has also benefitted students who don't show signs of dyslexia, but are struggling to read for a range of other reasons.
Most significantly, some of my students who began the year unable to read and knowing just a handful of letter sounds, are now beginning to read their first books!
Thank you very much for your support!”

Funded Mar 12, 2015iPads are an amazing resource to have in a classroom. With this technology, our students have access to curriculum, materials, and programs that help individualize learning.
This Donors Choose project was created because of a need for more technology when conducting research for our integrated science and social studies units. Our students are now able to conduct Internet research and take notes on shared iPads during these units. This helps build 21st century skills, as well as significantly widens the pool of information students can pull from when investigating the answers to questions.
We also use iPads during other parts of our day. Our students are now able to use programs like Raz-Kids during reading, as well as Dreambox to support math instruction. Raz-Kids provides students with a wide-selection of engaging texts that are at their "just-right" level. Dreambox is an engaging and adaptive program that adjusts to student levels.
With these iPads, student engagement and access to resources has grown significantly. Thank you for supporting our classroom and students!”

Funded May 16, 2013My students are thrilled with our expanded classroom library.
Our reading curriculum has improved with access to so many more books. My students are able to bring several books home every night to read and there are always new books and series to explore as they become stronger readers. Our unit on envisioning, making predictions, and forming theories about characters was stronger this year as students had more fiction texts with which to work. There is a range of reading abilities in my classroom and I've found that access to so many texts at different levels helps ensure that reading instruction is tailored to fit students' specific strengths and needs.
Access to a variety of books also supports writing instruction and learning. As students research and write their own non-fiction pieces, they will have many books from which to choose that will help them research various topics, as well as serve as mentor texts as we study what non-fiction texts look and sound like.
Thank you for supporting our classroom and my students' reading lives.”

Ms. Bohnsack
We Need A Library To Keep Growing As Confident Readers
Funded Aug 13, 2012I'm writing to express my gratitude for your generous donations to our classroom.
Our classroom uses our leveled library every single day. This extensive and well-organized collection of books helps ensure that students are exposed to a variety of engaging texts at their different reading levels.
As research shows, third-grader literacy acquisition may predict high school graduation rates. With the print-rich space you have helped create, our classroom is full of eager and constantly growing third-grade readers.
Thank you. You are all appreciated.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Bohnsack
