The materials I am requesting are some of what I need each year to help my students get the full benefit from activities to enhance their learning.
In covering TEKS 6.5D (Students will identify formation of a new substance by using the evidence of a possible chemical change such as production of gas, change in temperature, production of a precipitate, or color change), it is imperative that my students do some serious hands-on lab work to observe these changes first hand. They will observe chemical changes by adding baking soda to vinegar and watching a gas produced inflating the balloons. They will observe bubbling/fizzing and an endothermic reaction as heat is lost.
In covering TEKS 6.12E and 6.12F, (students will describe biotic and abiotic parts of an ecosystem in which organisms interact; and students will diagram the levels of organization withing an ecosystem, including organism,population....;) also for Pre-AP TEKS 7.5A (students will demonstrate and explain the cycling of matter within living systems ....; and 7.5C (students will diagram the flow of energy through living systems, including food chains....); and finally, 7.10A (students will observe and describe how different environments, including microhabitats in schoolyards and biomes, support different varieties of organisms); and 7.10B (students will describe how biodiversity ....); the terrariums will help students observe interactions between living and non living factors as well as investigate conditions needed to support life of populations and communities in an ecosystem. I plan to set up terrariums that model a dessert where students will see interactions between lizards and miniature cactus plants. We will also add crickets to observe the food chain in action. The paper will be used for note-taking (fun foldables), tracking and graphing growth charts, and for all of our lab reports and testing data.
