When you step into our classroom, you will see that guided reading and guided math take place daily. During guided groups, my students participate in center activities that focus on skills we are working on in our whole group instruction as well as skills my students need more practice with. During our guided center time, I want my students to be able to be comfortable and engaged in their center activities and I would like to do that by incorporating flexible seating into our centers. Flexible seating helps make learning fun. When students are comfortable, they are more likely to stay on task and retain more information. An uncomfortable student, is a distracted and unproductive student. Students are expected to sit in a desk and chair for the majority of their day. Desks and chairs do not accommodate to the needs of all students. Flexible seating is extremely important because it allows students to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. This type of seating would help my students who need to move around more without distracting others. Our guided center activities consist of 45 minutes for ELA and 45 minutes for math. This would give my students a huge break from the normal desks and chairs and allow them to be comfortable in their learning environment. My plan would be to incorporate the balance balls and bean bag chairs at their center rotations to improve comfort, engagement, and retention.
