  • Mango's Second Home

    Funded May 10, 2023

We are so incredibly thankful for the love you showed for our classroom pet, Mango! With this project, we were able fund a new tank that is big enough for our growing bearded dragon! This is important for a few different reasons: Students have more and better views of Mangito from any angle of our classroom. They are more likely to stay calm and relaxed. Secondly, Mango has room for more tank accessories! Over time we will fill it with more basking spots, hammocks to climb and caves to go under. We have a small sleeping mat that he is enjoying at night. We also recognize that your donation made it possible for us to learn more about the tank's temperature and humidity. Thank you for support us!”

  • STEAMers Need Headphones

    Funded Nov 29, 2022

This project was special because students were able to have their own headphones. As I try to differentiate instruction, I use iPads often. This makes small group instruction possible. We were in need of our own set of headphones so that students could hear the sound from their iPad without interrupting others.

The headphones were so exciting for students to have because we often had to share the little headphones we had. They are able to be more responsible for their belongings and are able stay focused on their task. It makes a big difference for us and we are so appreciative!”

  • A Safe Return for South LA Scholars

    Funded May 3, 2021

We are so thankful for your time, consideration and donations. It allowed a sense of relief for the students, my staff and myself as we returned back to a physical classroom during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Because of this project, we were able to guarantee everyone a mask and their own set of materials. During this pandemic, it was important for us to keep track of students' and belonging for contact tracing purposes. The extra materials like caddies and storage pouches made it easier for students to have their own set of things. We are thankful to you because it made our return back to campus a little bit easier.”

  • South LA Scholars Need Tools for Self-Care

    Funded May 8, 2020

This project made it possible to give my students resources to continue their learning at home and take care of their mental, emotional health. With your donations, I was able to send notebooks, pens, markers, art supplies and tools for self care. During this pandemic, my students needed to know they are loved and what they are experiencing is okay. Due to COVID-19, we left our classroom one day and then never returned. This project was an opportunity to say goodbye and equip them with resources they most likely did not have at home.

My students were so excited to hear I was putting together a care package for each of them with books they love and materials they wanted. Their smiles and faces were so bright! It made me feel so thankful that your donations could make it possible. Once I delivered their packages, they ran to rip open the wrapping and get started using their materials. Thank you so much for your kindness, willingness to give and empathy to support my classroom.”

  • STEAMers Need Headphones!

    Funded Aug 10, 2019

We are very appreciative of your generous hearts and donations! Your donation was incredibly impactful to the work that we do in our day to day learning. This project helped fund enough money to purchase headphones, which are used very often and strategically for small group work and instruction.

We are very thankful that now we are able to access our iPads and computers regularly without making too much noise. This is important because our small group work needs much attention and when other students are using the headphones we feel much more concentrated.

As an educator, I feel very honored to be gifted this project because it makes my life easier. My students and I really appreciate your time, energy and support. Thank you!”

  • South LA Scholars Need More Materials!

    Funded Nov 1, 2017

Thank you so much for your help and generosity! Our new math notebooks have completely changed our math instruction. Due to your support, my students are able to pick up their thinking right where they left off. The math notebooks hold multiple resources for them to reference. For example, on the inside of the cover we glued sentence starters to support students while they are giving explanations for their thinking and problem-solving. They know they can flip to the cover page and get a few ideas on how to begin explaining their thought process and problem-solving. Additionally, the buzzers have made math even more fun! We have used them for group competitions and also individual math battles. My students are extremely engaged and super excited when we use them. It has made a big difference for multiple students to improve their fluency.

My students attend a low-income school so multiple boxes of goodies made them beyond ecstatic! They knew we had a genuine need for materials so they were immediately happy to see what we received. Many of my students helped me open the boxes to see what was inside. When they saw the Polaroid camera we got, they immediately asked to test it out. We took a class picture with it and put it up on our bulletin that holds all their hard work!

Apart from their excitement, I too was beyond grateful to see some resources that I could finally access to help me be a better teacher. Having a projector screen and printer in my own room dramatically eased my stress. My students can now see videos, work, instructions and our timer very clearly. For example, before we had a projector screen we wasted time writing on the whiteboard. Today we use our Elmo to project whatever we need onto a clear, easy surface. Additionally, I can print whatever handout or assignment I need instantly without having to run to the copy room to do it. This means I can better make use of my time for my students.

In the future, I hope to get my students more STEAM materials. Some ideas include iPads, Arduino kits and art materials. Again, I am extremely thankful for your support and so are my Brown and Black scholars.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Barrios

  • South LA Scholars Need Books!

    Funded Jul 16, 2017

We have been in school for about two months now and it has been awesome to see my students dive into their books. We have had many discussions about how important it is to have variety and explore different interests. Each and everyone of them showed much enthusiasm during the first week of school. Due to your generosity, my students were able to get excited about reading! Since then, it has been so wonderful seeing my students create goals to improve their reading. Your donations made it possible to create an environment in which reading is fun and cool. With so many options to choose from, my students have the ability to choose books according to their independent reading levels and personal interests.

The donated books created much excitement about reading and discussion. My third graders have showed much companionship and often are seen talking about the books they are reading. Without your donations, my students would not have the ability to choose books or even access them. We are so incredibly thankful for your generosity because it has fostered a love for reading that students in low-income schools really benefit from. Your donations gave my students the opportunity to expand their interests. Many of them came in with one favorite author. Our awesome library provided options for them to explore their interests and books related to their hobbies. Two months later, my students have grown to enjoy reading multiple authors and illustrators.

I have especially enjoyed the donated books used for our interactive read alouds. Many skills and lessons introduced by the new texts have made it easy to explore ideas and thoughts my third graders deserve to discuss. They have been able to make connections to themselves and other texts. The best part, they treat the books with so much care. Scholars from Room 18 are forever grateful and looking forward to more books!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Barrios
