I teach a bilingual second grade class in an urban elementary school. Nearly 100% of my students receive free lunch, and come from homes in which English is not the primary language. Despite the violence and poverty within the neighborhood, my students love coming to school to learn, and I work hard to provide them with opportunities to enrich their literacy skills. All of these students are learning to speak English as a second language and need additional instruction to boost their language skills. I read with these children daily, but want to give them extra practice and build their confidence as readers and learn what it means to be a fluent reader.
