  • Distance Learning Tools Will Make Learning Cool!

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

Thank you so much for donating to our project. The distance learning e-card that we received has been making a tremendous impact on the learning experience of our students, especially when we are learning remotely. We purchased a $100 gift card from Teachers Pay Teachers in order to purchase resources to enhance our daily lessons and increase student engagement. We have definitely seen a difference in our students and how they approach their assignments. Your donation has allowed us to purchase engaging and colorful digital Writer's Workshop notebooks, digital math activities and anchor charts that are easy to use for our students. These materials have made life easier and more organized for all of us and we really appreciate your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Baltazar

  • Clear the Air. Stop the Spread. Get Ahead!

    Funded Aug 31, 2020

My class and I would like to thank you for your generosity. We have been using the air purifier each and every day to purify our air. Having it in our classroom has eased our minds and also the minds of our parents! Every morning, my co-teacher and I make sure that before students enter the classroom, the purifier is turned on and in rotation to create clean air at the start of the day. The purifier is amazing as it cleans the air every hour!

My students were very curious and happy to have a purifier in our class. This is the first time that all of our students have ever had one in their classrooms and they are grateful. They feel a sense of safety knowing that their learning environment is as sanitized as it can possibly be.

We will make sure that our air purifier is well taken care of! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Baltazar

  • Build Our Classroom Library!

    Funded Apr 19, 2019

I would like to send an additional thank you for donating to our classroom library this year. I would also like to express how much your donation has impacted my students. The dynamic of our classroom immediately changed once we received all of the wonderful books we wished for. Our morning routine became more manageable as students learned to take initiative by taking our their books and silently reading until morning announcements. During student conferencing students were ready to tell me all about the book that they were reading. We were also in the process of teaching students how to summarize texts through writing and this process became easier once the books arrived.

Students were more willing to complete their summary writing based on the book of their choice and it was evident that their efforts had increased. Each night for homework, students had the task of reading one to two chapters of their books and write a summary that included who the characters were, the setting, the conflict, what happened in the beginning, middle and end of the chapter, followed by the solution. These skills posed a great challenge for many students, however, with practice, consistency and the love of the new books we received from you, I noticed a significant improvement in summary writing.

There were a few particular students who enjoyed the new books and made strong connections between themselves and the characters in their book. A student from Mexico chose to read a book called "The Distance Between Us" about a Mexican girl whose family illegally crossed the border to reach the United States. This student was so glued to her book that every chance she had, she would open up the book and begin to read. Before receiving this book from Donors Choose, this student would often get frustrated about reading. Now, she has cultivated a high interest in reading books that she can connect with. Another student had a similar connection. She chose to read a book called "The Hijab Boutique" as she is a Muslim from Yemen. She connected so much to her book that her mom and her cousin even asked to read the book after her. These are some of the impact that occurred because of your generous donation. You have changed many students' outlook on reading and helped to foster an interest in books. Thank you so much for helping my classroom build our library!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Baltazar

These books will help our students become avid readers who realize the power of reading. We want to create a class culture where independent reading is valued by encouraging students, even those who struggle with reading, to enter the reading life. Having a rich classroom library with books on a wide range of reading levels and diverse topics will promote this goal. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind, and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. Third grade is a pivotal year for reading literacy because it is the final year children are learning to read, after which students are reading to learn. At this point in the school year, most students in our class have grown tremendously in their reading abilities and are now moving into the reading to learn stage. These books will give students a journey into themselves as much as the journey in the stories. They will boost their imagination, creativity and allow them to explore worlds they may have never dreamed of! Please help us continue to build our classroom library and reach the interests of all readers. Help us to enhance the print-rich classroom that we strive to create.
