These books will help our students become avid readers who realize the power of reading. We want to create a class culture where independent reading is valued by encouraging students, even those who struggle with reading, to enter the reading life. Having a rich classroom library with books on a wide range of reading levels and diverse topics will promote this goal. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind, and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading.
Third grade is a pivotal year for reading literacy because it is the final year children are learning to read, after which students are reading to learn. At this point in the school year, most students in our class have grown tremendously in their reading abilities and are now moving into the reading to learn stage. These books will give students a journey into themselves as much as the journey in the stories. They will boost their imagination, creativity and allow them to explore worlds they may have never dreamed of!
