I teach in an inner-city school in Chicago. I have a diverse group of 34 first students who come from the surrounding neighborhood and through a lottery system. Because we are a neighborhood school and a magnet school, my class is filled with varying backgrounds. My school is one of a kind where students are able to express themselves in a variety of facets. We focus on writing and literature in ever subject where teachers design their own curriculum using backwards mapping based on Understanding By Design. My students are surrounded my literature and writing in every content area and class. Students are fortunate to receive PE, are, music, library/technology, Mandarin Chinese, and dance class. We also offer extensive after school programs for children to attend. At my school, we strive to educate the whole child, not just the child who will take standardized tests.
