Family Paint Night: Reflecting on Kindness through Art!
Funded Apr 28, 2018Thank you very much for supporting this family engagement initiative! Your support helped us organize a paint night for more than thirty families! Each family member had the opportunity to create their own painting of what kindness means to them using beautiful paints, canvases, and an assortment of paint brushes. These paintings will soon be hung all throughout the Brightwood school. When I walked around the room and asked families what they liked most about the event, a young girl said, "I discovered here that I love painting!" Another child said, "I like painting because it makes me feel free!" It was so wonderful to see parents and grandparents sharing their painting skills with their children and there were even some parents, who said that they painted for the first time during our family engagement! Thank you again for your support and for being a part of my educational journey!”

For the Love of Books!
Funded Apr 4, 2017Thank you once again for supporting a project of mine! Many of you have been my classroom angels since the beginning of my teaching career and I wouldn't be able to do my job to the best of my ability without your generous support. Last spring, your generous donations afforded me the opportunity to expose my students to current events through the Time Edge subscriptions that I was able to purchase. Furthermore, your donations allowed me to purchase non-fiction texts that allowed my students to research a variety of topics with more depth. This new school year, I have been using these same books during my resource room period where I work with students who are struggling with reading. Your donated books have allowed me to engage students who are normally disengaged with reading! Students have slowly become engaged with reading because of the detailed, illustrated and description rich texts that I have at my disposal! They have also begun to use these texts to research different topics that are of interest to them. For example, some students have chosen to research what sanitary conditions were like during the early colonial period whereas others have begun to research what life was like for a Roman gladiator! In a school with no library, these books provide students with the closest thing to a real library. Your donations have given my students opportunities to choose books that they are interested and have encouraged them to be informed citizens about important global and national events! Words fail to express my deep appreciation for all of your support and encouragement along the way. Thank you for being on this teaching journey with me!”

Your donations have gone a long way since I received my Social Studies materials!
Thanks to you, I have had the opportunity to give my students interesting Social Studies homework! Students have been reading the comic books about American history and have used the Ancient Civilization literary resources to acquire background knowledge for their research projects! Due to a lack of books in my classroom, these resources have gone a long way! Furthermore, your donations have helped me keep my class and my students organized. Some of your funds went to purchasing an organizer that students use to get extra copies of homework as well as other resources to support their Social Studies work. The games that I purchased using your funds have been used to give students brain breaks, they have strengthened our sense of community and have given students a chance to get excited about using the content that they have learned.
Every time that I use your literary resources, I am thankful for your donations. I remember all of you in these moments and am grateful to have a community of supporters like you supporting my students' work and my own. I am also reminded and inspired to give back to others in the way that you have given to me.

Garden Dreams
Funded Sep 30, 2015Thank you very much for your generous donations! Your donations helped the students of P.S. 89 plant daffodils for our first ever school-community gardening event! Students were able to work with the earth and with their families using the gardening tools and gloves that we were able to purchase thanks to YOUR donations! It was wonderful to see how parents and their children used the shovels to dig holes and how children used the gardening gloves to plant daffodil bulbs! The turnout for this event was astounding and the school community was touched to see how many different cultures and grades came together to celebrate the planting of daffodils!
When students saw the gardening tools, they were excited to see such shiny and colorful instruments! Your donations helped students learn about gardening tools and the purpose behind these tools. Everyone took pride in being able to dig the deepest hole or rake the neatest soil covering.
Students will have the chance to use the gardening box and seeds that your donations helped us purchase in the spring! We now have a 100 plus member student gardening club! This club will plant seeds in the garden box and the garden box will hopefully be used for our STEM program.
Once again, I cannot thank you enough for each of your donations and warm messages to the students of 89. I was personally very touched by each of your donations and your outreach to the school community of 89. Each of your donations, brought so many smiles to both our students and their families.

An Awakening Investment For Our Future!
Funded Nov 13, 2014Your generous donations have been making an impact EACH and EVERY day! I have used the I-pads in so many different ways and am constantly discovering how I can integrate technology into my classroom to make learning more interactive and meaningful. Your donations have made it possible for my newcomer students to further develop their speaking and reading comprehension. In addition, students have been using the I-pads for their non-fiction research projects to help them gather information about their topics. Students have used the I-pads to learn about how stars are born and how they die, about the kinds of jobs people had during Westward Expansion, they have been able to "visit" different countries using I-pad applications to see what life is like, and they have been able to include relevant and credible evidence into their research projects. Furthermore, I have been able to use these I-pads to help students understand math concepts. Students have been able to access Khan academy videos through the I-pads, they have used virtual manipulatives to help them understand multiplication, decimal, and fractions, and they have used the I-pads for enrichment activities.
Your donations have most definitely made an academic impact, but most importantly they have taught my students a valuable life lesson about the art of giving. My students know about each and every one of you and are touched by your efforts. They know about your occupations, about how we met, and because of this you are very much a part of our classroom community and a part of their lives. Though you do not know them, my students now have you as their role models. My students have also learned the importance of volunteering and community building through your actions.
In closing, I would like to give you the opportunity to envision what my students felt and how they reacted when they received your gifts. When they saw the white I-pad boxes, their bodies were wiggling with joy and smiles brimmed across their faces. They couldn't believe that people had raised money for them for these I-pads! They asked just as much questions about all of you as they did about the I-pads! Thank you again for being a part of my classroom community and for believing in my capabilities as a teacher. I would not be able to do what I am able to do each and every day without your guidance, positivity, and incredible friendship. You all empower me and my students to go after our big goals and dreams.
