Exploring Emotions Through Reading and Photography
Funded Jul 25, 2024Thank you so much for your generous support. I am so excited to start the school year with this project. Students will be able to engage in empathy building, language development AND experiential learning by taking photos of each other exploring emotions with their new Instax cameras! The possibilities for other uses of the cameras are endless. While our focus will be on our emotions unit, I am certain that we'll be using the Instax cameras throughout the school year to deepen their understanding and learning. Thank you again for your contributions to this project. I appreciate you.”

Organization to Maximize Student Engagement
Funded Jul 31, 2023A belated thank you for your generous contributions at the start of last school year. Your donations to our classroom organization allowed for learning to be more vibrant and comfortable for all students. The rug gave a much needed cozy lift to the space. The storage bins created clear and distinct places for everything to go, which helped students practice organizational skills. The book displays enticed students to pick up that book they may never have decided to pick up otherwise.
Thank you for making learning in Room 9 a little more inviting this last school year. The materials you helped purchase will continue to enrich students' learning this upcoming school year and years to come.”

I am so excited to finally get the bikes in the hands of the students, and now with helmets and locks! My excitement pales in comparison to the excitement that my students have- they cannot wait!
Thank you for choosing this project- I know there are many needs in the community right now, so your support really means a lot to me.”

Bike the Bay Area!
Funded Feb 17, 2020Thank you so much for supporting this project! I cannot express how excited I am to be able to utilize these with students on Fridays and during our 3-week class at the end of the year. Having students' bikes equipped with racks and water bottle cages and water bottles will be a much needed upgrade to our fleet. I also cannot wait to use the saddlebags for our bike camping trips at the end of the year.
Thank you again for your generosity and investing in positive experiences for Oakland youth!”

Building English Vocabulary
Funded Oct 24, 2019Thank you so much for your contributions to provide students with index cards and index card boxes to hold all of the vocabulary that they are learning in their literacy classes. The impact that these materials have made on our classroom continues to unfold on a daily basis.
Learning vocabulary is one of the most fundamental components to language learning and the building block for oral production, reading, and writing. As a literacy teacher, I constantly see the correlation between success as a reader and reading comprehension with vocabulary development. The index cards and boxes provide a simple but incredibly effective to ensure that students are building their vocabulary in an engaging and stimulating way.
As you can see from the photos, students are not just focused and engaged but are having fun study vocabulary! You might not believe it, but the flash cards have enabled students to engage in vocabulary building in more meaningful ways than was possible before. Students feel pride over the words that they have learned and keep them organized with all of the words they have learned this year so far-- some of their boxes are overflowing already!
These index cards and boxes might be small, but they are mighty in the knowledge they have given my students and will continue to give them as they continue developing their English language.”

Funded Aug 13, 2019Thank you all so much for your generosity in making this project possible. I cannot thank you all enough for supporting my classroom to create a space in which students are excited to learn and read. Learning requires a person to be comfortable--not always an easy task for our students given the constraints in a classroom. The resources that this project has provided to students has allowed them to participate more effectively in our classroom community.
The stackable stools and carpets, as you can see in the photos, allow for different seating configurations that can be created in seconds. We now are able to have circles for check-ins and reading with greater frequency because it is so much easier to get everyone together instead of having to move heavy and cumbersome chairs. It is the simple things like that which make all the difference in a class. The different seating options also allows students to choose how they want to learn- a little agency can go a long way.
Students who I have had in past years come in to visit me and the class and it is almost every time that they comment on how amazing the space looks and how they wished it looked like this when they were in my class-- so the different is definitely noticeable- and even more palpable when students are moving through the space and making it their home.
All of us thank you so much for your interest and support in continuing to grow the warmth and community of our classroom!”

Ms. Kronick

Funded Dec 18, 2018Thank you all so much for your generosity in making this project possible. Working in a public school can be challenging due to the limited control we, as teachers, have around budgets and classroom materials. About halfway through the school year, our district faced mid-year cuts that impacted our classrooms and student learning. Thanks to the DonorsChoose community, my students' learning was not impacted by the cuts.
The dry erase markers and erasers enabled for collaboration in pairs and groups in the classroom, using small white boards. It is incredible to see how much engagement can result from a few simple (but necessary!) materials. The portable whiteboard allowed for students to participate in small group instruction that was also not limited to any one part of the group. And being able to facilitate or support students in facilitating small group work is far and above when some of the best learning happens.
Lastly, I want to thank all of you for your contributions for much improved lighting in my classroom. Since my classroom is in a portable, the lighting is hard to adjust and can be quite jarring...not the ideal learning environment. Being able to add more lamps to the classroom has created such a warm and inviting environment that students want to come into.
Thank you all again for contributing to my classroom and the learning of my students. I can assure you that your donation was appreciated by all and will continue to impact students in the coming school years.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Kronick
