Headphones allow students time to focus on individual learning. All students learn at a different pace. In my classes, I have students who struggle to concentrate around peers. I have students with IEPs and other needs that watch and listen to additional videos, sometimes even slowing the videos down in order to learn the content. I have ELL students who struggle to learn a math concept due to the language barrier. I have students who are excited about challenges and want to dig deeper into concepts. Luckily, technology provides students with an avenue to learn at in their own way and at their own pace. Our school is grateful to have the ability that each student has access to a Chromebook. In order to best utilize these Chromebooks and overcome obstacles to understand foundational math topics, students need headphones. While some of my students have their own headphones, I have many who do not have access to bring headphones from home. These students feel less encouraged to succeed when peers seem to have better access to individualized learning, time to slow down, study, and fully grasp a topic. I hope that with this project, I can show my students that despite any outside situations, math is attainable for all students!
