All of my students come from low to no income homes. With Head Start being a non-profit organization, it can be difficult to obtain new materials to help cultivate curiosity and the love for learning that I try to encourage in my classroom. Bristle blocks, connecting gears, and button sorting are important because they will significantly increase my student’s ability to develop fine motor skills. When these skills are developed my students will be able to master important tasks such as writing, feeding oneself, buttoning and zippering more independently. These abilities gradually develop through experience and exposure to a variety of toys and materials. Real life science materials such as insect specimens, a microscope, and water beads will help my students become more excited about exploring the world around them as well as introducing them to insects and animals they may never see in our locality. This aids in the learning process by allowing the student to explore the knowledge independently as well as providing repetition. Learning materials, regardless of what kind, all have some function in student learning.
