  • Calming Area

    Funded Feb 14, 2023

Thank you so much for your generosity. The calming area has been a great addition to my classroom, by supporting my students' Social Emotional Learning.

Whenever a student is experiencing "big feelings," they can choose to spend a few minutes in the calming area. Thanks to you, students can put on the noise cancelling headphones and read books about feelings, practice mindful finger tracing, play with reversible plush toys or perform other mindful activities. These activities help students stay in the present and calm down. After about five minutes, the kids are refreshed, peaceful, and ready to rejoin the class.

When my students first saw the materials, the kids were excited. So I let everyone take turns and spend a few minutes in the calming area. After a few days, students started using the calming are only when they needed to calm down.

In addition to the calming area, students are learning problem-solving skills, mindfulness meditation and yoga. I recently got certified as a yoga instructor for children, because I wanted to develop more skills to help my students.

Now that the school year is almost over, I realize how much my students have developed. I feel proud and very thankful to everyone who supported my project.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Albela-Silver

  • CD Player for Listening Center

    Funded Apr 6, 2014

The CD player completed our Listening Center. Students were thrilled to finally be able to use it! The Listening Center is a great activity for the "early finishers," as well as a center activity, for when my students benefit from a smaller group instruction. Thanks to the CD player, my students are able to develop their Spanish listening skills, through hearing stories read with proper Spanish pronunciation. Students can enjoy listening to books they've already read in their native language, and also discover new books by Latino authors.

Your generosity has enhanced my teaching and my students' learning.”

    With gratitude,

  • Spanish Classroom Library And Listening Center

    Funded Jan 30, 2014

When my students first saw the new listening center, they were curious and eager to test it. Some of them were quick to figure out how to operate it, so I picked them as "Listening Center Monitors." Now, all students enjoy listening to stories as they read them.

The listening center is a great resource for the "early finishers." It is also great when I need to work with smaller groups for a science, or writing activity.

Thanks to the listening center, students are able to hear proper Spanish pronunciation while they read a variety of exciting stories. They listen to stories they've previously read in their native language, and discover new ones by Latino authors.

Your generosity has helped me boost my teaching and my students' learning.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Albela-Silver

  • Reading and Writing Center

    Funded Feb 16, 2014

Pencils are a crucial tool in our classroom. They help us meet my students' goal of becoming the best writers they can be. Students were excited to find out that from now on, we have our own pencil sharpener in the class! Before, we had to collect the pencils before recess so I could sharpen them the office. We lost about five minutes we now spend learning!

Students were also excited to find a new set of nonfiction books. Through reading these books, students learn how to write informational paragraphs, with a main idea and details, about topics of interest.

A pencil sharpener in our classroom has helped us save time and having pencil that are always ready. The nonfiction book set has enhanced out classroom library.

Your generosity has made a great impact in our classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Albela-Silver
