Powering Learning With Laptops: Unlocking Potential in the Classroom
Funded Jan 23, 2025These computers are going to greatly impact our students. We have a laptop cart of 30, that we share between 5 classes. Having computers we can access in our classroom daily will be great for us publishing writing. Also, this will allow us to have centers in our classroom. This works by myself teaching a group of students, my co-teacher teaching a group and having some go on computers to do lessons online. Having this flexibility will allow us to better target student needs. We will also be able to use these computers for research!”

Funded May 2, 2024These computers have been a wonderful contribution to our classroom. We have been able to use them almost daily. They allow us to have students work at a computer center in math and reading, where students can use a program that gives them the practice they need. This can be on current skills, past skills and even future skills. In addition, it allows students to publish their writing on the computer.
I did a project back in 2016 where I received chrome books and still have them today. I know these newer computers will be used for years to come.”

Growth Through Books and Play
Funded Oct 12, 2023We love the materials that were purchased for our class. We were able to use the books right away in our mystery unit. It was wonderful having our students use the same texts to help them engage in great conversations.
In addition, the magnet tiles have been wonderful to help students build amazing structures together. The amount of team work they are able to use is wonderful, and the creativity really shines.
The headphones have helped when students are using computers. Not only do they help keep the student using the headphones focused, but help others around them not be distracted when working.
We appreciate all the supplies and will continue to use them.”

Funded Oct 11, 2023When we opened the box and students saw the supplies, their eyes lit up. Immediately, everyone wanted a chance to use the chairs. They noticed how they were extra cushioned and even more comfortable than the one we already had.
The students have been enjoying the rug seats. We only had one in the beginning of the year. It was something they all wanted to use. However, with only one their time was limited. When working in small groups at the carpet the chairs are much more comfortable during work time. Students often use clipboards and these chairs allow them to easily work. Also, we take turns using them when we have full group lessons by switching off what table uses them during each subject.
The sand was another awesome addition to our classroom. We only had a small container of it, and it was not enough for a group to use it during center time. We try to have weekly centers where students can be creative and socialize in a constructive way. The sand allows students to create with their classmates.”

Funded Nov 30, 2021Thank you so much for the books you donated to our class. We use the workshop model for reading. That means that students have the ability to choose their books to practice the reading skills they are learning in class. The new books have created more opportunities for students to choose books that really interest them each class. Also, we have used the series books for book clubs. Book clubs are when students work in groups and are reading either the same book or books from the same series. For example, students all reading different Fly Guy books. This allows them to engage in conversations around books and see how an authors' writing styles can be seen throughout different books. They love the Elephant & Piggie and Fly Guy series so much. They are constantly looking for them in our library and asking classmates to trade them. In addition, the books surrounding plants are excellent since we are currently in our plant unit. I am looking forward to using these books for years to come!”

Funded Nov 8, 2021We love all of the resources that were donated to us. They were so excited to see the clay, modeling dough, and carpet squares. They immediately began asking when they could use the materials.
We began using the carpet squares right away. Students were able to use the squares to work independently and take a break from sitting in their chairs. Also, I use them to set up an area where I can pull a small group to work with. We were studying artifacts in one of our IB/Social Studies unit, and learning about Ancient Civilizations. The clay was used in art to create clay tablets. Student then had an opportunity to write their names in hieroglyphs in the clay.
While we haven't used the modeling dough yet. We are going to be using it to help create models during our Earth: Inside and Out unit. Also, the carpet tiles will be continued to be used daily around our classroom. Students love laying on them and reading a great book!”

Getting Our Hands Dirty for Science and Social Studies
Funded Sep 23, 2018These resources have helped give our students hands-on experiences. We are lucky to have libraries filled with many rich texts to read about science, history, and social studies. However, we were limited to resources to create art and perform experiments and explorations. Through Donors Choose, I was able to give my students new experiences outside of reading. We recently completed a unit on artifacts and how they teach us about the past and the people who lived during that time. In G&T we like to go deeper, so we studied the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt. This included looking at how they lived everyday life, their rulers, their religions, and their languages. Students wrote their names in Hieroglyphics on paper, writing vertically. Then, collaborating with the art teacher, we rolled out the clay and used toothpicks to carve their names. They were able to see how writing was a much larger tasks for Egyptians and appreciate the availability of paper since papyrus was very costly during ancient times. In addition, we are going to begin learning about the Earth. This will include studying the layers of the Earth, learning how rocks and crystals are formed, and seeing how tectonic plate movements have impact on our planet. We are excited to use the rocks to help us study the different types. Also, we will get a chance to work in stations to complete the fossil dig, open up the geodes, and mine for gemstones. Science and Social Studies are often subjects that get overlooked with such much emphasis on reading, writing, and math, but they are crucial in helping our students learn and grow. I cannot thank you all enough for helping create these rich opportunities for our students that will greatly impact their learning and futures.”

Chromebooks: Helping Us Learn and Connect With the Outside World
Funded Dec 20, 2016These Chromebooks have made a huge impact in our classroom. They are used everyday! We work in literacy centers each day, and we are able to have a technology center now. In this center students are able to work independently on a website, MyOn. Students are able to choose books to read along with, and then answer comprehension questions. While we have a very nice classroom library, the website has thousands of books to chose from, and gives students a lot of options.
In writing, we have been working on non-fiction writing. We have been able to use the computers to research various topics. Recently, we have begun doing a biography project. Students had a chance to look up various African-American women, and then chose someone who they found the most interesting to them. They have been using the computers to help with this research to learn about women that they knew little about.”
