Our class is preparing to embark on the adventure of historical fiction! Research shows that students are more engaged in reading when they choose the book themselves. In our historical fiction book clubs, titles will be available in the following genres of American history: The American Revolution; The Growing Nation; African Americans in the 1800s; Life in the West; and Civil Rights. Each student will select an era of history and a coinciding historical fiction novel to experience with a group of four to five classmates. The purpose of this project is to strengthen reading comprehension and fluency by increasing student engagement. For some, the social dynamic of a book club or the genre of historical fiction may be new experiences. It is my hope that our students have a rewarding journey to our nation's past in a historical fiction book club.
