Funded Aug 10, 2022Thank-you so much for your interest and donation to my project where S.T.E.A.M. can be integrated in learning both inside and outside. Can wait to send pictures of students in our updated technology and science/math centers, as well as creativity outside on our courtyard.”

Funded Jul 26, 2020Wow, what a year it has been so far. We have been remote teaching, in person teaching, and hybrid teaching with 15 in person and 3 remote zooming 3 times a day. Sorry its been a while since I have touched base, but we had one of our items out of stock; the girl puppet Sienna. We have reordered her and are hoping to get her in.
The students have the teacher and boy puppet Jose, they have helped so much with our shy students and with our students with autism. It has been fun watching students talk to both of them, especially when we talk about our emotions and how we are feeling each day.
The monster books have been a great addition to our library and our cozy space to look at when they want to look at the pictures and identify with the emotions. We just finished our study on clothes and learning about colors thru the study.
Thank you for your donations that helped purchase these items for our ever changing classroom and providing an outlet for emotional learning and some continuity for them all.”

Funded Apr 1, 2019Well, sorry it has been a while since you helped fund my project from last year. Mother Nature decided she wanted to have some fun and our schools EOG testing Locations kept us from going outside and painting.
Here are some updates and pics. We started using the cameras right away and the students were so excited to start using them! One student in particular, girl with bow in picture, wanted to be like Ms. Barbee and take pictures of things she worked hard creating. She was able to independently use the camera and take her own pictures. I have also been able to use the cameras with this year's class as well!
Over the summer I was able to paint the shapes on the courtyard wall and the parking places for our tricycles. Luis has really enjoyed going up to the shapes and ask, What shape? He is Hispanic and getting better with his English. Vanessa likes to get a number and ride her trike to that number and say the number. Thanks again for making an impact on not 1 but 2 classes and many more to come!”

Funded May 1, 2017Thank you so much for the materials you donated to our STEM learning courtyard. The students loved the building tubes and the garden planting bed and soil. The picture of the boy standing in the middle of his castle is the one I wrote about when seeking donations. He was so excited that he became the little person in the building!
They were supposed to be used outside, but at the end of last year rain and end of year testing for older grades kept us inside. We decided to use them inside in our building center, they loved it! It also kept us from planting in our beds, so we made our own garden at the art table and the last picture is our bulletin board of how we thought our garden might be.
Our new class this year will get to benefit from the garden planters and possibly plant pumpkins. This project was the first half of our STEM learning courtyard. This coming year I will be submitting the second half with emphasis on the Technology and Math components so stay tuned and look for the new project in the coming months to see what we will do!”

Funded Feb 25, 2014Wow, I can't tell you how excited our students were when they learned they were going to Discovery Place Kids. With the trip being at the end of the school year, it was a great release and time to just have fun in the middle of testing and the end of year stuff. We showed the class the website so they would know all the themed areas and materials they could use when we got there. Some comments were, "I want to drive the fire truck!" and "I am going to work with the cats, I have one at home." The day of our trip, you could barely contain the excitement!
Upon our arrival to Discovery Place Kids, we split our class up into smaller groups with an adult to help with questions and to interact and have conversations with the kids. We were able to help some of our limited english learners put names with objects such as ambulance, fire engine, Veterinarian, and restaurant to name a few.
After the trip, we saw many wonderful examples of learning that came from our trip. Our class as a whole just talked and talked about all they were able to do. I heard, "I saw you driving the fire truck, and another said, "that was a fire engine." and "I saw you guys fixing the baby in the ambulance, you were going to the hospital." "Astronauts must have fun in space." Some specific individuals who are more quiet and reserved were actually talking some and they drew pictures and labeled what the liked. At the end of the year, I looked at the data from our formal vocabulary testing and everyone tested increased from the beginning of the year by at least 8 pts. The opportunity they had for real life application and interaction was invaluable for young minds to experience and retain new information they can use later on.
Thanks again for your part in providing this trip to Discovery Place Kids.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Barbee
