Students must be given an ample amount of opportunities to work collaboratively with their peers. Through station work, students are able to dig deep to analyze a text through their discussion of the various reading skills and strategies. The true beauty is that it allows students to take an active role in group discussions. Its interactive nature engages students from the moment they open up the colorful bins and read the directions. The dry erase boards, construction paper, and scissors, will provide hands-on experiences. For my English Language Learners, in particular, stations allow them to enhance their knowledge of academic vocabulary. They enjoy being able to cut apart pieces of evidence and matching them to the corresponding character traits. Vocabulary comes alive when dry erase markers and boards are placed in their hands. Stations work effectively because students like talking to their peers and being given the opportunity to choose their assignment. Stations allow me to differentiate instruction and to select texts of high interest to the students. Last week students had to evaluate the claim that “children spend too much time playing video games.” Imagine the horror in their faces when the author used Fortnite as the main basis of his argument. Students were eager to read the text and find pieces of evidence from other sources to counter argue this claim.
