My fifth grade class has 31 students. We are a diverse classroom of students from a variety of different backgrounds. 50% of the students in my classroom regularly speak languages other than English, including two students who spoke no English before beginning kindergarten. My students are bright, voracious readers. They love nothing better than to curl up with a book in their hands. However, while my students love to read, getting them to read nonfiction texts is not always easy. They can (and will!) read fiction books all day, but their exposure to nonfiction is more limited.
