Funded Aug 2, 2022As we start our 8th week of preschool, I am amazed to say how much my students appreciate their classroom library. For some students, being able to read me their favorite story during small groups is a reward for them as well as me. It blew my mind when several of my 3 year olds picked up a book and started sounding the words out and then continuously practice their sounds down to the point of them being able to read the whole book to me.
Every morning we start our day with a story, which is when we practice our "who, what, when, where, and why" questions. We discuss the parts of the book and I encourage them to act out the story during dramatic play. I have noticed during centers, my 4 year olds are trying to read to their group members and I've seen some of them ask the same questions that I ask during our circle time and story time. This alone shows me that they are understanding what I am saying and that they are focusing and listening during my circle time.
I do have particular students who love reading more than others. I have a few nonverbal students who love the simple board books that teaches them their colors, shapes and ABC's. I also have a student who loves the Bad Seed books and he has read every single one to me independently! If it wasn't for their new library, I wouldn't be seeing these skills as much because I didn't have many books to begin with that would have captured their attention. This new library has been a blessing!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Yearling
