  • Books Here, Books There, Books Everywhere

    Funded May 5, 2020

When I began this book project, I never could have imagined that we would be facing a pandemic. The original plan was to use the books in my annual book tournaments. With the advancement of Covid-19, none of the tournaments could go on as scheduled.

Luckily, I was able to postpone the book shipment to the fall. What I also didn't anticipate was a change to a hybrid model for the district that I teach in. That being said, I'm making the best of this situation and making good use of the books.

Instead of using many of the books in various tournaments, they are being used for online book clubs. They're also being used by the fifth grade students at school. I am grateful for having this project funded and look forward to using the books in the original manner in the future.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Werkheiser

  • Advanced Books for Voracious Elementary Readers

    Funded Apr 17, 2019

Thank you so much for your donation to my Donors Choose project! Because of your generosity, I have ample resources for my high level readers.

The books that I was able to purchase through this project have helped with a number of reading incentives throughout the elementary school I work in. In 4th and 5th grade, I'll be using the books in a blind book challenge where students pick their next book based on a short summary and reading level. In 3rd grade, I'll be using the books to help students in their quest to read 1,000,000 words in this school year. My second grade students are embarking on a reading treasure map where their gold coins will travel from island to island as they earn points on Accelerated Reader.

As a teacher, it is hard to keep up with all of the latest in book trends and assure that all reading levels have a lot of choices. Your donation has, no doubt, helped my readers excel!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Werkheiser

  • An Engaging Book Collection

    Funded Feb 10, 2019

Having this Donors Choose project funded has been amazing for my students! We've expanded our book library and have been able to use many of the books in the book tournaments that are going on in 2nd and 3rd grade. With these low level readers, I've been able to engage many students that can sometimes be reluctant readers!

We're currently heading to the final round in 3rd grade's book tournament and some of these books that were used are heading to the finals! It's been an awesome experience for the students to get excited about the tournament and really dive into new authors and genres. In fact, even the books that have not advanced to the next rounds are popular with my students!

I am grateful to the donors for helping my students become lifelong readers!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Werkheiser

This project includes 60 books- 10 of each of 6 titles. With a set of 10 books for each title, we can conduct book clubs and have literature circles with small groups of students. Book clubs are a great way for my students to work together to develop ideas, delve deeper into the characters, and examine plot development. Some students aren't yet ready for typical chapter books so they need titles that are designed for children that are helped by visual cues, lower reading level, and less text per page. All students should have access to books at their reading level that are engaging and exciting. This collection of books will meet reading level needs of general education and special education students and offer titles in multiple genres to help them explore all kinds of literature.
