  • Bringing Branches to the Shelves

    Funded May 18, 2024

Thank you so much for your generous donation to the Bringing Branches to the Shelves project. Scholastic Branches books are some of the students' favorite series.

One of the things the kids like most about these series is that they have beautiful illustrations. All of the books are brightly colored and have fun and engaging characters.

Your donation has helped fill in many of the newest series like Pets Rule, Adventure Friends, and Hello, Hedgehog. Their faces light up when they discover that there is a new series to get into.”

  • Trading Card Game Club Materials

    Funded Jan 18, 2024

Your donation to this project has meant so much to this group of 5th graders. It has given them a positive environment to develop strategic skills that will take them far beyond just playing Lorcana. Having the mats, counters, and card sleeves made the games seem much more important and official. They learned to play by the official rules.

Since the beginning of the club in November until now, I have seen huge growth in their ability to problem solve, strategize, and adapt to new situations in Lorcana. As new cards have been introduced into their decks, they've learned how to make cards work together to increase their success in the game. They've been working on thinking multiple steps ahead which will help them in other areas of their academic success and other situations.

I am so grateful that your donation made this club a huge success for this group of 5th graders. I already have students interested in playing next year!”

    Mrs. Werkheiser

  • Keeping the Reading Momentum Going

    Funded Mar 30, 2023

Your donation to my "Keeping the Reading Momentum Going" project has been a huge help in expanding the book collection available at George Wolf. There are multiple hurdles to reading and one of them is keeping kids in books that they enjoy.

Many of the books are in the fantasy genre which can be difficult for some readers. The fantasy books have been a huge help in giving children more options.

We will utilize your generous gifts for years to come. Right now, the fantasy books have been included in the genre shelf in the reading specialist classroom. All students in grades 3-5 have access to these books.”

  • Book Tournament Sets

    Funded May 3, 2022

I am so grateful for the books that your donation helped be purchased for George Wolf Elementary School. These books have enriched our collection and helped teachers offer high interest and low readability books.

These books have been used in a number of ways. Some titles have been worked into a fall reading challenge, they have been used for small group instruction with teachers, and I am planning to add some of the titles to a March Madness reading tournament for the spring.

In 2nd and 3rd grade, students have books by Kate DiCamillo read aloud to them. This project included two books by the same author and they have been very popular. Another book that has been read many times is Henry Heckelbeck Gets a Dragon. Many students have read books in the Heidi Heckelbeck series and this spinoff series has kept them interested in the Heckelbeck family.”

  • Blast Off with Series Books

    Funded Oct 21, 2021

I was so excited to receive the books from the Blast off with Series books project. The students went wild for the books--especially series like Desmond Cole Ghost Patrol and The Terrible Two.

The Terrible Two was used as our "First Chapter Friday" book which prompted a number of students to borrow the books. Then they took quizzes which earned words toward their 1,000,000 word challenge.

Series books are a great way to keep up the momentum of reading by always knowing that the next one is available. They become a coveted set because they can be passed along as others join in on reading that set.

Thank you again for your generosity!”

  • Below Level Readers for 2nd and 3rd Graders

    Funded Oct 21, 2021

Thank you so much for your contribution to the Below Level Readers project. This project brought over 40 new books to the 2nd and 3rd grade students. This addition to our collection has given below level readers access to books that mirror some of the books that their higher level peers are reading. For example, Mister Shivers is a great "spooky" book for kids who are hoping to read Goosebumps. The Acorn brand of books are similar to the style of Branches books which helps everyone feel like they are reading books that are of similar quality and style.

The books from this project have helped my students become lifelong readers!”

  • Dragons and Fairies and Monsters--Oh My!

    Funded Mar 16, 2021

Thank you so much for your donation to my book project. These fantasy books have been a big hit with the 5th grade students. In 5th grade, students explore the fantasy genre in depth and this has made it easy to find text to work with!

Of all genres, fantasy tends to be one of the most engaging. For whatever reason, they can't get enough of dragons, fairies, and monsters. One of the books that generated the most interest was When you Trap a Tiger which is a recent Newbery winner. It has allowed children to explore award-winning text.

The Train to Impossible Places series was one that I was so thankful to have because it kept one of my students absolutely intrigued through the whole series. In the past, he had resisted reading at every turn and he couldn't put this one down!

I greatly appreciate everything that was provided to my students and they will be well loved!”

  • Baseball, Cheering, and Hockey Books-- Oh My!

    Funded May 4, 2021

I was so grateful to receive the books for my latest project. Having books themed around various sports has helped to engage readers across grade levels. For a student who is interested in sports, this has given them a new way to connect with reading.

With adapting to the changes brought on by the pandemic, it is fantastic to see students able to check out more books and spend more time reading independently as well as along with classmates. Students eagerly go to their "reading office" which can be at various locations in the classroom.

Your generous donation has made a difference to my students and helped me have the perfect books for each student.”

  • Books for Animal Lovers

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

I want to extend my sincere thanks for your donation to the Books for Animal Lovers project. This project provided so many books that students connected with through furry friends!

Although this school year is fraught with restrictions, changes to instructional days and times, and an increase in the use of distance learning, I was able to provide them with brand new titles to keep their interest.

A few of the series that are most popular right now are The Imaginary Veterinary, Wedgie and Gizmo, and Klawde: Evil Alien Warlord Cat. All of them include fun plotlines and hysterical characters. A number of students flew through the entire Veterinary series and were suggesting it to their friends (I mean, who doesn't want to know about how Nessy and Sasquatch get help when they're sick). This project has done exactly what I had hoped--create a love for books and a thirst for reading!”

  • Calling All Gamers!

    Funded Oct 22, 2020

This year has been an unprecedented and difficult school year for many districts. I am so grateful for your donation toward this project. 5th graders are not always the easiest to motivate and these gamer-enticing titles have raised great interest.

Despite the huge changes to instruction, books for my Calling All Gamers project have been of great benefit to my 5th graders. These books have become sought after in my collection. The need for quarantining between readings has added a layer of difficulty but we are making it work.

Many of the books are borrowed on a regular basis. Guardians of the Taiga and Ben Braver are a few of the current student favorites. One book that is constantly sought after is Zack King-- the mix of allure being magic and YouTube brings students to my shelves in search of it.

Thank you again for your generosity. It is appreciated so much.”

    Mrs. Werkheiser

This project includes 60 books- 10 of each of 6 titles. With a set of 10 books for each title, we can conduct book clubs and have literature circles with small groups of students. Book clubs are a great way for my students to work together to develop ideas, delve deeper into the characters, and examine plot development. Some students aren't yet ready for typical chapter books so they need titles that are designed for children that are helped by visual cues, lower reading level, and less text per page. All students should have access to books at their reading level that are engaging and exciting. This collection of books will meet reading level needs of general education and special education students and offer titles in multiple genres to help them explore all kinds of literature.
