Funded Jun 17, 2016Wednesdays are my favorite days. For many, Wednesday is a hard day to get through. Halfway to the weekend, but still three full days of work. But for me, Wednesday is my happy day. Wednesday is Sustained Silent Reading day in my class. For the first fifteen minutes of each period, my students file to the back of the classroom, grab their increasingly worn copies of The Martian, and start reading.
At first, my students dreaded Wednesdays. Some still do. But others grab their books before the bell has even rung, and dive into the adventure head first. Some of my students are still slogging away at the first chapter, but every week I see the bookmarks move further and further into the book, and it takes longer and longer for my students to put them away. They keep reading, trying to get to the end of the chapter, to make sure Mark Watney is going to be okay. I've even started hearing students laugh out loud, no doubt when Mark makes another of his signature lame wisecracks.
I am so glad to see so many of my students enjoying this book. Nothing makes me happier than hearing a student tell another, "It's really good, you should just read it." When students finish work early, now they grab their book and read until the bell rings. I'm so very grateful to be able to give my students this opportunity.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Villaire
